Word document deleted itself when saving

This.is.just.not.happening. I tried to save my project, which I've been working on for 2,5 years (still heavily overdue), when all these windows popped up saying stuff I don't remember. And when I looked in the folder, the word file was gone! To make things worse, I didn't save a recent copy of it. How do I get it back? Please say there is a way to retrieve it!!  :'(

you could try the Recycle Bin? Should be on the desktop. other than that I am no geek so can't suggest anything

Google for word recovery options.  It should have been auto saving your file for a while.

Thanks! There wasn't anything in the bin and I restarted the computer to see if that made any difference, also updated the folder. Tried searching now, and it didn't find it. I really don't understand how a file can delete itself? Never happened to me before.

I think I have an older version of Word... I can't find the File location tab.

Is it Microsoft Word you are working with?  You may try clicking on your Start Menu, and under the Search function, type in *.doc to search for all Word documents on your hard drive.  Make sure to look in all drives/folders that it could be in.  I've never heard of a Word document ever deleting itself on its own.

I found a copy of it - it says "Saved document", but it's not a Word file but a Note file. And when I open it I can read a bit but then it's full of "????" Is there some way I can convert it back?
I saved it on an extern disc, but the "Saved document" is in My Documents folder on the C: disc.

I would try right-clicking the file, and then Open As..., and when it asks you what program to open the file as, you would select Microsoft Word.  If you typed the entire document in Word, it doesn't make sense that it would convert it to a Note file.  I'm wondering if maybe your Microsoft Word is out of date and needs a new keygen?  Are you able to create and save other documents in Word?

It didn't work with Open As..
It probably is out of date (like 5-10 years?) + it's a copy.. I've never had this problem before though.

Before you do anything, I would make a copy of that "Saved Document" file and put it some place where you won't lose it / mess it up accidentally (and it'd probably be best to put it into some other folder so that Microsoft Word or Windows doesn't automatically delete it either).

Anyway, if that file is not a .doc file (or .docx or whatever) then one of two things is going on.  Either Microsoft Word saves the back-up as an exact copy of the original file but with a different file extension, or else Microsoft Word creates back-ups in an entirely different file format.

If the former, then all you need to do is rename the file.  To do this you need to go into the folder, make sure the file extensions are visible (I think there's an option for that in the View menu), and then just right-click the file, choose Rename, and change its extension to .doc or whatever.

But if the latter then the back-up isn't actually a Microsoft Word document, and you will likely need some additional software to convert it.  I do not know if such software exists or not, but as long as all the textual data is still there then there's certainly some way to convert it.

Renaming it didn't work and zamzar couldn't convert it to .doc or .docx.
