Catholicism (Brownson) vs. Orthodoxy (Guettée)
« on: September 01, 2019, 09:40:32 AM »
Posting this for discussion if it hasn't been posted already.

Sedevacantist Steven Speray posts a reply "Intellectual Catholic Giant Annihilates Champion of Eastern Orthodoxy" https://stevensperay.wordpress.com/2019/08/03/intellectual-catholic-giant-annihilates-champion-of-eastern-orthodoxy/

to

ex-"Catholic Traditionalist" John Pontrello's "Did St. Cyprian Teach Papal Supremacy?" https://www.thesedevacantistdelusion.com/proof-texting-cyprian

There's been a back and forth going on, but it seems John mentioned an ex-Catholic priest turned orthodox priest from the 1800s named Réné-Francois Guettée, who wrote a piece that was supposed to argue against Catholicism, "The Papacy: Its Historic Origin and Primitive Relations with the Eastern Churches" which can be found online here: https://archive.org/details/papacyitshistor01guetgoog/page/n9

Orthodoxwiki entry on Guettée: https://orthodoxwiki.org/Vladimir_(Guett%C3%A9e)

Mr. Speray in response found Orestes Brownson with a response in Volume 8 of his works, there are 53 pages on the topic starting on page 474 in Volume 8 responding to Guettée: https://archive.org/details/worksoforestesab08browuoft/page/n7

The other volumes of Brownson's works are available for reading: https://archive.org/search.php?query=Orestes%20Brownson

Wiki entry on Brownson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orestes_Brownson

I am not through reading on both sides, but does anyone have any thoughts on all of this exchange?

The title alone is enough to prevent me from reading the article. Adolescent, puerile, vulgar. No one who writes a title like that is capable of doing reliable historical research that can be trusted to be honest and objective.

The title should have been enough to prevent me. Alas, I did. Will we ever reach a point where we accept that all the same arguments have been had for centuries, and very little changes? The schism can only be healed by divine intervention.
O Mary most pure, golden censer that became the tabernacle of the uncontainable divinity, in you the Father was well pleased; in you the Son did dwell; and the Holy Spirit, by overshadowing you, revealed you to be the Birthgiver of God.

Is this the title everyone is referring to:

Speray's Catholicism in a Nutshell
Apologia for Sedevacantism and Catholic Doctrine

(I'm dense)
[Matthew 8:26]  And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm.

[Job  38:1-5]  Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said: [2] Who is this that wrappeth up sentences in unskillful words? [3] Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me. [4] Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? tell me if thou hast understanding. [5] Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Jesus, Mary, I love Thee! Save souls!
