Had the itch to listen to some memorable Chinese songs today and thought I'd share a few.  The music is pleasant enough that you need not know what they are saying.

The first is, yes, a communist song from 1955.  This is taken from a patriotic film of that same year.  It is filmed at Beihai Park in Beijing next to the Forbidden City.  I have visited there before and the boats are still there being paddled, but no one was singing this tune.

Let's Paddle Together
Let's paddle together
The boat pushed the waves away
The beautiful white pagoda is reflected in the sea
Surrounded by green trees and red walls
The boat floats gently in the water
There was a cool wind blowing head-on
Red scarf facing the sun
Sun shines on the sea
Fish in the water looking at us
Quietly listen to our happy singing
The boat floats gently in the water
There was a cool wind blowing head-on
Finished one day's homework
Let's have fun
I ask your dear friend
Who arranged a happy life for us
The boat floats gently in the water
There was a cool wind blowing head-on

This is an extremely popular love song from 2003 performed by Li Jian.  But it was not popularized until 2010 by Cantopop star Faye Wong at the Chinese New Years Gala (every year the country puts on an all-day Gala show which every channel runs 24/7 for like a week during the CNY holiday - it is filled with music, comedy sketch shows, dance, acrobatics, etc).  Now this song can be heard all the time in the mainland wherever you go.

Legend
It's because I saw you in the crowd
I will never forget your face again
Dreaming of seeing you one day by chance
Since then I have been alone in thought
When I miss you, you are on the horizon
When I miss you, you are in my sight
When I miss you, you are in my mind
When I miss you, you are in my heart
I would rather believe that in the past we were destined to be together
This life's love story will not change
I would rather use this life to wait for you to discover
That I have been by your side and never walked far away

I do not much like Jay Chou's music but I do like this song.  Jay Chou is a Taiwanese superstar, think like Justin Timberlake but for Asia.

Rice Field
If you have too many complaints about this world
If you fall, you dare not move on
Why do people want to be so fragile
Please turn on the TV
How many people are bravely going on for life
Should we be content
Cherish everything, even if you donít own it
Remember you say home is the only castle
As the Fragrant Rice River continues to run
I smile a little, I knew my dream
Don't cry, let the fireflies take you away
Country songs always rely on
Go home and go back to the original beauty
Don't want to give up so easily
Like I said
If you can't reach your dream try another and you'll have it
Make your life bright and colorful
First paint love with your favorite color
Have a little laugh, the meaning of life is not success
Make yourself happy, this is the meaning
Childhood paper plane
Now finally fly back to my hands
All of my joy
Chasing dragonflies in the field barefoot till tired
Stealing fruit and being stung by bees
Who is laughing?
Leaning against the scarecrow singing songs in the blowing wind I fell asleep
Oh oh, the guitar is more crisp in the afternoon
Oh oh the sun is not afraid of heartbreak
Cherish everything, even if you donít own it
Remember you say home is the only castle
As the Fragrant Rice River continues to run
I smile a little, I knew my dream
Don't cry, let the fireflies take you away
Country songs always rely on
Go home and go back to the original beauty
Remember you say home is the only castle
As the Fragrant Rice River continues to run
I smile a little, I knew my dream
Don't cry, let the fireflies take you away
Country songs always rely on

Culture Jamming: "The term was coined in 1984 by Don Joyce[9] of the sound collage band Negativland, with the release of their album JamCon '84.[10][11][12] The phrase "culture jamming" comes from the idea of radio jamming:[11] that public frequencies can be pirated and subverted for independent communication, or to disrupt dominant frequencies."

I know a woman in Minsk who looks exactly like Niamh Lynn.

Could be her twin sister.

She is single too.

Not just a great piece of organ music but a great movie scene.

Just the music below
