NO News: Pope Francis Bans Cardinal Law from His Own Church
« on: March 15, 2013, 07:28:37 PM »
Quote
So when the appearance of a disgraced cardinal threatened to cast a shadow over his first engagement, Francis I made sure it couldn’t happen again - by banning him from his own church.

Cardinal Bernard Law resigned as Archbishop of Boston in 2002, after being accused of actively covering up for a litany of paedophile priests.'

Despite the scandal which exploded to engulf the entire church, he was given an honorary position at the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, in Rome.

Though now retired, the cardinal still enjoys a grace and favour apartment in the cathedral complex.

So hearing that the new Pope was offering prayers at the very same church, it seems he couldn’t resist a discreet peak.

But when Pope Francis recognised him, he immediately ordered that Law be removed, according to Italian media reports. He went on to command: ‘He is not to come to this church any more.’

One of the new Pope’s first acts will be to arrange new ‘cloistered’ accommodation for the disgraced cardinal, the Italian daily, Il Fatto Quotidiano, reported.

Yeah, except for the fact that the Daily Mail story may have been inaccurate:

UPDATE II

Pope Francis spends first hours as leader of Catholic Church in prayer; has brief meeting with Cardinal Bernard Law

Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi today confirmed that during his visit to Saint Mary Major, Francis “discreetly’’ greeted Cardinal Bernard F. Law, who was the archpriest of the basilica before he retired from that post.

Pope Francis Snubs Cardinal Law

According to reports from Fata Quottidiano , Cardinal Law wanted to meet the new Pontiff. But he did not like to do so. Papa Francis is now planning to move the Cardinal involved in the pedophilia scandal, pushing him into a monastery, as originally wanted by the Vatican, which, however, never materialized.

“Cardinal Law was present in a discrete manner in the chapel along with the members of the chapter and confessors, having been until recently the Dean of St. Maria Maggiore. Then he returned to his home. Nothing to add. ” Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, told Adnkronos in response to journalistic speculation whereby yesterday Pope Francis during his visit to the Basilica of St. Maria Maggiore in Rome, told Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, to keep away from the Basilica.

lol.  Wonder what "Francis 'discreetly' greeted Cardinal Bernard F. Law" is really supposed to mean...

There are a pile of sources reporting this.  At least 6 Italian sources.  Free Republic is quoting that Daily Mail article.  There's an Update III on the St Peters List site now.  The Wikipedia page for Bernard Francis Law is already updated to say "On March 15, 2013, Pope Francis banned Law from ever entering the Basilica again." and "Law, who resided in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, was expelled from the basilica by the newly elected Pope Francis on March 15, 2013."
Like John Vennari (RIP) said "Why not just do it?  What would it hurt?"

He rode the bus with Mahony.  Law didn't vote for him.  Law is only useful as a tool.  If it were a principled expulsion Mahony would be banned from everywhere and in a monastery as well.

Sorry MikeMac  8)

Turns out it is horseshit made up by the press.

http://bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/03/16/anti-abuse-advocates-slam-new-pope-for-meet-and-greet-with-cardinal-law/s29iSzkLUnSJvBlkUPsWiL/story.html

But the Rev. Thomas Rosica, a Vatican spokesman, quickly dismissed that report as a fabrication and called it “absurd.”

“The Italian media story is completely false and without any foundation,” Rosica wrote in an e-mail Friday. “One only need watch the images of Pope Francis greeting Cardinal Law at this morning’s meeting with the Cardinals at the Vatican.”

I wonder if this "tough guy" rumor spreading is a way to test the public reaction to various "approaches."  Who knows what really happened?  Unless I see a picture, I can't have certitude he actually was in the same room with Law.

One thing I do have certitude about is that 99% of what we're going to see especially the "spontaneous" stuff is contrived.

I'd be wary of Fr. Rosica's interpretation of...well, just about anything.

Recall...

Is Cardinal Law packing his suitcase?

Guess we would know if he was.

Made no sense to me that F would do that as a first thing. It is much more likely that he had a humble pastoral chat with the Cardinal.

The way most of the outlets have tried to report it, they make it sound like His Humbleness was downright jumped by the man in red!
