Any fencers on SD?
« on: September 29, 2015, 09:51:43 PM »
my daughter has taken it up recently, she's doing foil. so to encourage her we looked up some videos on YT. firstly, wow. i've been involved in martial arts and fight sports most of my life but i honestly don't know wtf is going on in fencing... they score so quickly. very fast sport; very cool.

secondly, we found a video on rapier and dagger. made me wonder how easily one can translate from foil to r&d... i'd consider doing a little foil while r&d isn't available to me and transition to r&d later if it works that way. her coach doesn't know much about it, just foil and epee.

I used to fence a bit, many years ago, I'm afraid.

Just remember not to sharpen the foil! (I knew someone whose Italian grandfather did just that!)

From memory rapier is not regarded as a woman's blade, too heavy I suppose , but even a knitting needle or frypan can be deadly!

I was 50 years ago and I once had occasion to defend myself with a sword. I was being attacked by a drunk with a WW I German bayonet. I drew my sword, went into en garde, and told him to back off. He didn't, so I pinked him in the arm. Didn't stop him, so I warned him again and then ran him through the arm. He dropped the bayonet.

i think traditionally women used foil only, not even epee or saber but my daughter's coach is female and is doing epee now; she tells them they can score anywhere on her lame or something.

i was interested in rapier and dagger for me, though, not for my daughter. i've done some traditional Japanese kenjutsu/koryu bujutsu stuff but i'd rather Western sword work. recently found out my friend's brother does HEMA up in Taranaki so might have to try hitting him up.

hehehe.

apparently they are gonna put on a show for Shakespeare's 400th birthday soon or soemthing. that'll be exciting for them.

That is one of the coolest things I've ever heard.

Something I have wanted to do, being the dreamy, romantic, weirdo that I am. There is also archery!
