Title: New here...
Post by: EastWest7 on February 13, 2014, 06:55:24 PM
Hello everyone, I have been reading this forum since December, first post was today. I was asked about the name I use... Up In Here is a blues song by Chicago blues harp player/vocalist Junior Wells (I've been a blues fan since I was a kid) and the lyrics really aren't relevant as such. The "up in here" I reference would be (up in) cyberspace i.e., this online forum.

Welcome. Even if your name was from the DMX song, it would totally fit.

Greetings.  As you already know, I liked your first post; may it be the first of many.  Thank you for giving us the reference behind your user name.  Contra Spooky, I would've been disappointed had it been the DMX song, since after all you are in your 50s, are a former seminarian, and have an abiding interest in Christian mysticism.  It would've been too incongruous for my tastes, so: phew.

If it's the one that goes "y'all gonna make me lose my mind, up in here, up in here" then you are far from the only one to think of that song.  I hate that song, for what it's worth.  I still think they need to take the "C" off CBS news and put it on the front of the word "rap."

Thank you all for the kind welcome! I never heard of the DMX song, only the Junior Wells song from way back around 1968!  :) So, am thinking I do not want to be associated by name with what may or may not come to mind relative to DMX/hip hop. I am not the most computer literate person in the world, but would it be possible for me to easily change my name? With my Orthodox theological background/Easter Catholic parish attendance, perhaps EastWest (the name of the brilliant second Paul Butterfield Blues Band album from 1966) rather than a Junior Wells blues recording makes more sense?  :) Not sure how to do that, though.

He used to drive his Buick and pump the brake up & down along with the beat, too.  Incongruousness makes life interesting sometimes :)

I would almost suspect that you're "taking the piss" here, as they say, but then I have to wonder if anyone would joke around at the expense of their wife's departed old Italian grandpa.  If he did do that, then I think he would be better remembered as a veteran and a good Catholic.  Incongruousness can be ... undignified sometimes.  Especially where hip-hop is concerned.

I'm not really a blues fan, so I don't know the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, but "East West" is also the name of a single by Herman's Hermits from 1966, one of the best years in music.

It's a true story about my wife's grandpa.  He really had the CD, and he really enjoyed it.

I have no problem with hip hop if and of itself.  My homecare nurse listens to French rap sometimes.  He is from Toulouse.  I'm not sure what the lyrics actually mean, but it sounds like to me they're rapping about buttery pastry, strolling through the countryside and harvesting lavender in Provence.  I don't understand French, though.

It's probably a good thing you don't.  Understand French, that is.

There may be nothing intrinsically wrong with drumming a beat and grunt-rhyming over top it (it's too savage and staccato for my tastes; to each their own, though), but every musical genre comes with its subcultural mindset and accoutrements.  Hip-hop's are vile.

I think I might want to change my username to "Pon de Replay."  The YouTuber who made that Nelly video got the song's name wrong.  It's actually called "Ride wit Me."  If you want to rap along, here are the lyrics:

QuoteWhere they at [8X]

[Chorus]
If you wanna go and take a ride wit me
We three-wheelin in the fo' with the gold D's
Oh why do I live this way? (Hey, must be the money!)

If you wanna go and get high wit me
Smoke a L in the back of the Benz-y
Oh why must I feel this way? (Hey, must be the money!)

[Verse 1]
In the club on the late night, feelin right
Lookin tryin to spot somethin real nice
Lookin for a little shorty hot and horny so that I can take home
(I can take home)
She can be 18 (18) wit an attitude
or 19 kinda snotty actin real rude
Boo, as long as you a thicky thicky thick girl you know that it's on
(Know that it's on)
I peep something comin towards me up the dance floor
Sexy and real slow (hey)
Sayin she was peepin and I dig the last video
So when Nelly, can we go; how could I tell her no?
Her measurements were 36-25-34
Yellin I like the way you brush your hair
And I like those stylish clothes you wear
I like the way the light hit the ice and glare
And I can see you moving way over there

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
Face and body front and back, don't know how to act
Without no vouchers or boozers she's bringin nuttin back
You should feel the impact, shop on plastic
when the sky's the limit and them haters can't get past that
Watch me as I gas that, 4.6 Range
Watch the candy paint change, everytime I switch lanes
It feel strange now
Makin a livin off my brain, instead of 'caine now
I got the title from my momma put the whip in my own name now
Damn shit done changed now
Runnin credit checks with no shame now
I feel the fame now (come on), I can't complain now (no more)
Shit I'm the mayne now, in and out my own town
I'm gettin pages out of New Jersey, from Courtney B.
Tellin me about a party up in NYC
Can I make it? Damn right, I be on the next flight
Payin cash; first class - sittin next to Vanna White

[Chorus 2X]

[Verse 3]
Check, check -- yo, I know somethin you don't know
And I got somethin to tell ya
You won't believe how many people, straight doubted the flow
Most said that I was a failure
But now the same motherfuckers askin me fo' dough
And I'm yellin, "I can't help ya"
"But Nelly can we get tickets to the next show?"
Hell no (what's witchu?!) you for real?!

[City Spud]
Hey yo, now that I'm a fly guy, and I fly high
Niggaz wanna know why, why I fly by
But yo it's all good, Range Rover all wood
Do me like you should - fuck me good, suck me good
We be no stud niggaz, wishin you was niggaz
Poppin like we drug dealers, sippin Crissy, bubb' mackin
Honey in the club, me in the Benz
Icy grip, tellin me to leave wit you and your friends
So if shorty wanna... knock, we knockin to this
And if shorty wanna... rock, we rockin to this
And if shorty wanna... pop, we poppin the Crist'
Shorty wanna see the ice, then I ice the wrist
City talk, Nelly listen; Nelly talk, city listen
When I fuck fly bitches; when I walk pay attention
See the ice and the glist'; niggaz starin or they diss
Honies lookin all they wish - come on boo, gimme kiss

[Chorus 2X]

Hey, must be the money! [4X]

Then let's do this.  I was not bluffing.  "Pon de Replay" it is.  Absent the quotation marks, of course.  But please retain the spaces.  It has a "Ponce de León" quality about it; and yet, as a Rihanna reference, it will carry an unmistakable contemporary hip-hop-culture vibe.  It will be appropriately incongruous.  It will speak for much.

I may even choose to have a Rihanna avatar.  There's a really strange guy on The Thinking Atheist forum who appears to be inordinately devoted to Gwyneth Paltrow, with Gwyneth Paltrow pictures in his signature, and a byline declaring himself the high priest of The Living Cult of Gwynnitie or something.  I may get as weird as that.  For effect.

I do not know if there was such a similarly-named cookie, or whether it predated the rock group or not.  Perhaps they named themselves after the cookie; the members of the group were, after all, very young.  Their singer, Peter Noone, was something like the Justin Beiber of the British Invasion scene.  They were only slightly less manufactured than their American counterparts, The Monkees.  But both groups had some halfway decent sugary-catchy songs, even if they didn't write them themselves.

I think I have heard that song.  I googled and discovered that the cookies do not have a "Herman" in the them.  They are just hermit cookies.
QuoteIt's so easy to like Hermit Cookies, with their soft and chewy texture, their spicy flavor, and how they're loaded with raisins, dates, and nuts. The general consensus is that Hermit Cookies were so named because of how long they can be stored. This old fashioned 19th century cookie must have quite a few fans because on the American Food Holidays' calendar November 15th is National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day.

I'm old enough to have very fond memories of the British Invasion (saw the Beatles first Ed Sullivan Show performance on TV when I was 8), and always have like I'm Into Something Good by Herman's Hermits. Myself, I got very much into blues, jazz and R&B by the mid 60s, however, must admit that I went to two Peter Noone/Hermits shows  in the early 2000s and he was outstanding. I have a great deal of respect for the man.
