Well that's why a lot of Highlanders joined the Loyalist side, still with hopes of a Stewart restoration.  There was a planned French invasion of Britain in 1759 with Jacobite support, just a short time before the American Revolution.  Charles Coulombe has an interesting article about why Highlanders joined the Loyalist cause that I can't find right now.  Coulombe is a member of the Royal Stuart Society.

In this interview Coulombe talks around it but doesn't come right out and say the Highlanders joined the Loyalist side still with hopes of a Stewart restoration, unless I missed it.  Although at about 1:24:00 he jokingly says "So the argument can be made that if you are a true blue Jacobite and you live anywhere from Georgia to Maine your rightful king is the Duke of Bavaria."  Franz, Duke of Bavaria is considered by Jacobites to be the current legitimate heir of the Stuart kings of England, Scotland, Ireland and France.
