This notable Field Marshal died on this date in 1736. A veteran of the Battle of Vienna in 1683, he scored notable victories against the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Zenta in 1697, Petrovaradin in 1716 and Belgrade in 1717 not to mention victories over the French in the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, Oudenarde in 1708 and Malplaquet in 1709 in alliance with the Duke of Marlborough. Eugene's successes against the Turks not only helped break the back of the Ottoman Empire but it can be argued that thanks to him the Turks never again posed a serious threat to western Europe and the Church.

Thanks for sharing this, Mr. Mysterious.

Eugene of Savoy is one of my favorite military figures of the modern age. An accomplished war genius and one of Louis XIV's most grievous blunders, although in fairness the sun king couldn't have known at the time how brilliant the young man would eventually become.

I have a picture by his equestrian statue in Budapest.
DISPOSE OUR DAYS IN THY PEACE, AND COMMAND US TO BE DELIVERED FROM ETERNAL DAMNATION, AND TO BE NUMBERED IN THE FLOCK OF THINE ELECT.
