The Amityville Horror scared audiences when it opened in 1979. But what was it like living in the house that inspired the horror movie?

Monsieur Dupin

The only scary thing about "Amityville Horror" was that it was occupied by a hulking, bearded brute who was played up at the beginning of the movie as a sex symbol. I'd run screaming, too.

In all seriousness, Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated that place and said it was haunted to the nth degree. There were Catholic priests who said likewise.

"Nothing is more miserable than those people who never failed to attack their own salvation. When there was need to observe the Law, they trampled it under foot. Now that the Law has ceased to bind, they obstinately strive to observe it. What could be more pitiable that those who provoke God not only by transgressing the Law but also by keeping it? But at any rate the Jews say that they, too, adore God. God forbid that I say that. No Jew adores God! Who say so? The Son of God say so. For he said: "If you were to know my Father, you would also know me. But you neither know me nor do you know my Father". Could I produce a witness more trustworthy than the Son of God?"  St. John Chrysostom  Sunday Homily

Spooky

I think the real horror story is the murder of the DeFeo family, not the hoax the Lutzes perpetrated to make money off the blood of children. The Warren's should be ashamed of their involvement in this...

There really is evil. I saw something once between two people, and it gave me nightmares every single night for months.

Butch DeFeo admitted the haunting was a hoax to raise money for his appeal (and to claim he wasn't responsible for the murders, that he had been under the influence of the demons). There is no doubt he was under the influence but rather that of drugs and drink.

It's all a big, fat, admitted hoax.

You mean evil in general?

This post confuses me a bit.

Ah, the good old days when the History Channel actually showed interesting programs instead of Ice Road Truckers and Pawn Stars.

He could have been influenced by demons as he used drugs and killed people

I remember reading the entire book cover to cover in one day. To this day I hesitate to stare out of a dark window in case I see 2 red eyes staring back. It was a work of great horror FICTION.
