Thank you for posting this.  It is actually very believable that child porn would be hidden in plain view in "the next big thing."  Priests have talked about the dangers of porn; when someone becomes addicted to pornography soon regular sex and even regular porn isn't enough because their lusting becomes more and more disordered.  In a culture saturated with pornography it's easy to believe people would read and watch this and not see the diabolic disorder before their eyes.

If it's child porn, then why is its main readership women?

Marketing, for one. Women are typically more stimulated by thought and reading than men, who are more stimulated by visuals. And two, it is thinly veiled. There are two ways to read a book: accept certain premises as given by the author (i.e., this is a complete work of fiction) or to think/realize/accept that the author caveats with such phrases, or even character attributes, to veil the actual intention of the work. For example, Fr. Malachi Martin's "fiction" novels. They contain true people, even if given a fictional name and facade.

The character claims to be 21. She has no technological experience... did she come from a luddite household? Unlikely. She has the emotional maturity of a young teen. etc. While she claims to be 21, she exhibits no actual characteristics of a 21 year old, save one who is mentally retarded at a higher functioning level.

Either the character is a kid or is a mental child in the body of a 21 year old. Either way, the characteristics culminate in a disturbing narrative.

But why are American women so interested in thinly veiled child porn?

They might not realize it... just like many Americans are interested in thinly veiled devil worship under the auspice of something "good".

Also, marketing is a big factor. A good marketing program can have people interested in all sorts of things. Oprah has pushed the trilogy, and Oprah could have half the women in America engaging in whatever Oprah wants.

Remember that BS a few years back, "The Secret"? It was a bumbling mess, but Oprah pimped the book on her show and it took off like wild fire.

These things can only explain so much. If it's thinly veiled child pornography, then the natural and obvious conclusion is that a huge number of adult women like to read thinly veiled child pornography.

Women project themselves onto the characters of stories they read/hear. If millions of women are enjoying thinly veiled child porn, it's because they want to fantasize about being physically dominated by a much more powerful, older man. Perhaps many women have been in relationships with weak spineless men and are over compensating. Interesting is that the character of the wealthy perverted man becomes emotionally dependent on the mousy librarian character which is another female fantasy. He brutalizes her body and she brutalizes his heart. It is a demonic caricature of the natural order.

Yes, and men too.

I agree with the conclusion, but I'm still not sure that this novel is actually thinly-veiled child porn. I haven't read it, but my impression is of a thinly-veiled rape fantasy. This, from what little I understand of women's psychology, seems more likely. The childlike characterization would be an incompetent author's attempt to play up the young woman's naivete.

Agreed with Ms. Jayne on the rape fantasy interpretation. It's just the naiveté of the girl character is so exaggerated it's unreal.  Apparently she doesn't even know how to use a computer. It's likely the author had no intention of making her "romance" so similar to a child porn scenario but is it so far fetched that one so steeped in perverted fantasies would be open to further diabolical inspiration?

That isn't so far-fetched, no.

Because it's deceiving? Why do Priests condemn Harry Potter for witchcraft and yet it's the most widely read series of the 21st century?

Marketing, for one.

There wasn't any marketing originally. It started out as a self-published e-book. The popularity was a grass-roots phenomenon. And those people at the grass roots level buying this fan-fiction when there wasn't any publishing support were all women.

It was written by a woman for other women. That is the reality.

So anything that you have to say about it has to be said with that context in mind, otherwise it is completely inaccurate.

Trying to find some way to twist this around and blame it on men is simply perverse.

No. The women who buy this book know exactly what they are getting. They are not being fooled.

Nor, for that matter, are the people who buy "Harry Potter."

This series of books and Harry Potter collectively dominate the best-selling books of all time. They were all written by women. In between those two series we had a third publishing phenomen -- also written by a woman -- "Twilight."

No one is deceived about what's contained in these books. Not even the middle-school girls at our SSPX school who are obsessed with "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games."

Everyone knows that Harry Potter is about witchcraft, and everyone knows what this other trash is about too. I think it's usual for the child to be the object, rather than the subject, of child pornography; and for the child to be physically a child, rather than a full-grown woman. This other interpretation is sort of startling and interesting, but the more intuitive answer is it's basically a rape fantasy.
