I was looking into making raised garden beds this year, only to find the cost of cedar prohibitive ($25/12'!), and I'm making alot, so that was out of the question.  Looking around I found this.  Interesting

If it weren't so freezing cold!
We have a huge amount of rotting sticks and debris from recent storms here.  It's a fabulous idea.

Cedar at our local Lowes or Home Depot are dirt cheap. Maybe $1 more per plank than basic pine.

$2.99 / each
If you buy 260 or more
$2.69 / each

You could also build raised beds out of cinder blocks.  I've not done a cost analysis on that, but if you stack them with the holes facing up, you could even plant inside of them.

I looked into the pickets and they are the best option.  Upfront cost will be a little over $100, which isn't much considering how much I'd spend on veggies at the store.  I need to change my diet from filling up on cheap starches (noodles, etc) so my grocery bill has gone up alot lately.

Can you utilize pallet boards (free) vs picket?  My neighbor did that, pulled the boards off, and also used whole pallets to hang on the fence and plant other items like flowers and herbs.  I see lots of how to's on the internet.

Pallet boards are usually pine though, I don't think they'd last

My first compost bin was made from Yellow (Southern) Pine pallets.  I was surprised how tough it was. Lasted for years.

I was commenting to my wife yesterday how the 2x4's I posted in the ground for our garden gate aren't rotting away after several years.  Maybe I will look into pine, afterall, with a raised bed most of the moisture would drain down anyway, or else the sun would wick it out of the boards.

White pine starts rotting the first year. The Yellow pine was so hard, almost brittle, that it was hard to drive a nail into it. I finally tied  four of them in a square.

Pallets are often treated with chemicals - especially if they're intended for international shipping.  Exercise care when using them around food products.

Anyone that wants piles of cherry and maple sawdust can pm me.  I've got loads of it that I discard on an almost weekly basis.

That's just slightly awkward, I don't think my wife would appreciate it.

Although May 12 is World Belly Dance Day, let's see what luck I have with that  ;)
