It might not be as bad as that.  People have survived collapses before.  When the Roman empire collapsed, contrary to what is often said, it seems that life in the former empire went on much as before.  The roads were still used and the infrastructure remained.  After the initial period of looting and plundering, things calmed down because at the end of the day, everyone has to eat.  It takes about a month to die of starvation and about two weeks to be too weak to stand up.  All you have to do is wait it out, bury the dead and carry on.
