Memento mori!  That was Holbein's motto!

No, see, I get that.  But why's it there, and looking like that, all distorted and photoshopped looking?

Art historians themselves don't know why he added it to that painting.  I myself wonder how the people who paid for it thought when they saw it; my art professor thought they might have thought the technique rather neat.  Also, the subject of the painting is rather worldly, two ambassadors showing off their worldly learning, maybe Holbein thought to teach a moral lesson.

the memento mori devotion is very old.  St. Francis of assisi used to look at a skull and meditate on his own death.

as has been said, memento mori is a long stadning Catholic tradition. my wife made this for me due to my devotion to memento mori. it's made from relatively inexpensive beads, but holds a great deal of sentimental value to me cos she made it to be especially suited to me.

if you saw me in the back of your church with it in my hands it would look fitting hahaha.

I was going to get one of those memento mori rosaries when I first reverted only because in my work I saw so much death and just how many people are unprepared is astonishing. So I wanted to include a purgatory prayer with it

i have seen some photos of his, they look great. pricey though but they would be worth the pice.  mine cost under ten bucks for the materials.

He's also quite generous.

When I was getting into making rosaries, I asked him about the best places to get certain parts. He asked my address and said he'd send me some things to get me started. What showed up was a giant box FULL of rosary-making everything, including various tools.
