One Car Families?

I was home, in the country, when hubby got a great job....and hour away. That was when we bought a second car. Most of our married life we bought used and husband did most of the work unless a hoist was required. Got our first new car at time of the great  job. Felt like luxury. We still buy used, just relatively new...used.

Yep.  All of our cars are used, and husband does all the repairs, etc....except for oil changes and transmission work.  I've never had a brand new car in my life.  But then, we've never had a car note, either....it's worth the trade off.

A side note: be willing to help out with errands. My grandmother did not drive, so my grandfather did all the grocery shopping. If your wife is working part time, it means she would have more time to do those kinds of tasks, but without a car it's hard.

I can own and run two cars cheaper than 90% of people can own and run one car.

We had one up until I was mid-way through my first pregnancy and didn't have a driver license. I went grocery shopping with my MIL and if my friends wanted to go out, they would pick me up, which was very kind. We could probably get by with one car, but that would mean no social life for me and my daughter, a lot more planning around buying groceries, and having to rely on others when in necessity. I don't like to be a burden to others, so being able to get out and about on my own is something I couldn't go back to (unless I had to).
If we lived in my home town in Europe we could get by without a car - now we need two. Huge difference.

Friend of mine once owned around 13 cars at a time and parked them in the back streets of Fulham and Chelsea, when there were still and few roads in London without yellow lines, where you could park for free.  He would sell them, buy more, and several weeks later would find a set of keys in a jacket pocket, or desk drawer, but be unsure where he had parked the car they belonged to.  A few weeks after that, he'd drive by a car covered in dust and remember it was his.  Then he would have to bump or jump start it because the battery was dead.

He actually lost several of them altogether.  Like losing socks.  They just disappeared.  Gypos probably had off with them once they thought they were neglected.

Most cars I ever owned simultaneously was 11.  My lucky number.

Number 11 actually was my number when I was a boarder at the Visitation Convent School in Bridport, Dorset. The children were all given numbers and were addressed by those numbers not by their names. My elder brothers had been there before me and I remember a hand-me-down pullover with my Brother John's number of 124 on the name label.

I suppose numbers must have been recycled for me to have such a low number.

If you live in a traditional neighborhood, and don't need the second car, I don't see why you'd have it.

If you live somewhere where you need a second car, going purposefully without sounds foolish.
