My uncle Kevin thinks that my newly acquired machinists chest is veneered oak. I'm leaning toward it being solid, though I don't think it's quarter sawn. Is there an easy way to tell? It's not lightweight, and I can feel the wood grain on the front and side surfaces.

Looks solid to me.  Oak isn't anything extremely expensive or uncommon that the manufacturer would go cheap, especially given the age on it, and for its purpose you'd want solid oak that won't lose its veneer over time by peeling, wear and tear, etc.

All of the modern ones made overseas are veneer.

Your's looked "vintage."  Correct?

Yes, as far as I know. There's another one exactly the same on ebay, that the seller is listing as antique.
