What's not clear to me is how you know when your isolation is "splendid" or when it's just being all alone.

I imagine it's when one is not only all alone, but reveling in the solitude.  Or it might be a question that only the Syd Barretts, Greta Garbos, and Howard Hugheses of the world can answer.  Perhaps there's a certain level of eccentricity required.

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
    It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
    It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
    And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
    And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
    There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
    Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
    World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

When I watched Peeky Blinders for the first time I just scoffed and said with a contemptuous tone, "I've been listening to Nick Cave since Limewire."

Go thy ways, old Jack;
die when thou wilt, if manhood, good manhood, be
not forgot upon the face of the earth, then am I a
shotten herring. There live not three good men
unhanged in England; and one of them is fat and
grows old: God help the while! a bad world, I say.
I would I were a weaver; I could sing psalms or any
thing. A plague of all cowards, I say still.

Just got tickets to see these guys play and to hear speeches about the Second Amendment at a luncheon from Ted Nugent, Larry Pratt, and Sheriff Mack at the Kansas Rock Your Rights Festival in May.  Hopefully Ted will do a little playing as well!  I'm so excited!

I adore Thee O Christ, and I bless Thee, because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world!

"Don't waste time in your life trying to get even with your enemies. The grave is a tremendous equalizer. Six weeks after you all are dead, you'll look pretty much the same. Let the Lord take care of those whom you think have harmed you. All you have to do is love and forgive. Try to forget and leave all else to the Master."– Mother Angelica
