'Hanukkah began at sundown. Happy #Hanukkah to those who celebrate!', the religious news agency posted at the start of the holiday, accompanied with a photo of a relief from the Arch of Titus in Rome.

The stone carving depicts the Emperor Titus' victory in the campaign against the Jews and the looting of various spoils including a seven-branched menorah from the sacked Temple of Jerusalem, according to NPR.

After Twitter users pointed out the somewhat offensive nature of the imagery, the Catholic News Service took down the tweet, offering an apology of sorts. 

'Earlier today, wishing people a happy Hanukkah, we posted a photo that offended many of our followers,' the news agency posted. 'The tweet has been removed and we apologize for any offense caused.'

The level of remorse left some social media users still wanting, so the news service again had to post a more specific apology.   

'Sunday we inadvertently posted an offensive photo. We were sloppy in our tweeting; people were right to be offended. The person who posted the tweet now fully understands the implications of the picture. We apologize again.'

A ban by Jewish leaders in Rome at some unknown point in history even stated that any Jewish individual walking under the Arch of Titus could no longer be considered a Jew, the Forward reported, until the prohibition was rescinded in 1948.

Hanukkah itself is a celebration of the re-dedication of the Second Temple. Before it was sacked by the Romans the temple was destroyed by the Babylonians and rebuil


They could have avoided this by not mentioning it to begin with. When false ecumenism bites you in the rear, eh?
