First Communion Altar Boys

I have a question. Is there any source on wheter or not Altar Boys need to have received first communion to serve? Is it okay for a boy to serve without having received it (and not receive it during mass?)

This is a discretionary issue. I think it's best to have received first Communion (and/or confirmation, in places where it's normal to receive it young) but it's not a hard rule.

There is also no obligation for altar servers to receive Communion at the Mass they assist for.
