"Tu scendi dalle stelle" ( "From Starry Skies Thou Comest", "From Starry Skies Descending", "You Came a Star from Heaven", "You Come Down from the Stars") is a Christmas carol from Italy, written in 1732 in Nola by Saint Alphonsus Liguori in the musical style of a pastorale. Though found in numerous arrangements and commonly sung, it is traditionally associated with the zampogna, or large-format Italian bagpipe.
History
The melody and original lyrics for the hymn were written by Alphonsus Liguori, a prominent Neapolitan priest and scholastic philosopher (later canonized) who founded the Redemptorist missionary order. In 1732, while staying at Convent of the Consolation, one of his order's houses in the small city of Deliceto in the province of Foggia in southeastern Italy, he wrote the Christmas song that begins "You come down from the stars" entitled "Little song to Child Jesus". This version with Italian lyrics actually came after the original song written in Neapolitan entitled "For Jesus' birth" and that begins Quanno nascette Ninno (When the child was born) and sometimes referred to as the "Carol of the Bagpipers" (Canzone d'i zampognari). Since that time, the "Little song to Child Jesus" became a widely popular Christmas carol in Italy.

Well, glad you like it. To me, the Theology of the Hymn is most important, even more than the history. After that, the tone and reverence of the music. Since this particular hymn is all about Baby Jesus as "King and God and Sacrifice", and indeed is based on the soundest understanding, that the Three Kings, after worshipping Baby Jesus, gave him offerings of Gold, to signify He is King; of incense, as was given only to God, to show before all, with Mother Mary and St. Joseph approving, that the Baby born whom they worshipped is the Supreme God Himself; of myrrh, to denote his life of sorrows and sufferings, and especially His Sacrificial Death.
A couple other beautiful and interesting points about ChristMas, related to the Hymn: The Fathers see in that Star of Light that led to the wise men to Jesus Christ Our Lord, a type of the Blessed Virgin, one of the significations of Whose Name means "Star". Mary is that beautiful grace-filled, Light Star that leads all men to Jesus Christ. And so, for those who know that, it is beautiful to sing "Star of Wonder, Star of Light, Star with Royal Beauty Bright".
I Love Christ-Mas Season and I love that many of my even non-Christian friends sing ChristMas Carols and learn of Jesus Christ during it. But when one really believes, that God in His Infinite Love has come down from Heaven, and become a Beautiful Baby for Love of us, then ChristMas Joy knows no bounds, and we rejoice at the thought of being loved so much, and love God in turn. There is a secular saying, "the greatest joy in life, is loving and being loved". And Christians can and are called to experience and share that joyful loving and being loved during ChristMas.
The second point, is that Bethlehem, the Manger, and the Mystery of Christ's Mass, is all so beautifully and closely connected to the Mystery of the Eucharist, by which the Miracle of ChristMas in Bethlehem is renewed in the Catholic Church. For Bethlehem signifies House of Bread, and the Meaning is that God has become the Bread of Life, come down from Heaven to give His flesh for the life of the world. And so the adoration of the wise men has always been considered a type of that adoration of the Eucharist which we ought to render always to Christ living among us in His Church, by which He, Baby Jesus Our Lord, is always as close to us as He was that Night.

A week ago, on Saturday last, a group of us from Church went Caroling by car. After 7 odd hours of visiting a dozen odd houses - and a great time - some people at 1:30 A.M. were finally like, "Ok, when are we getting home?"
