Clare

This is my favourite translation of Adoro Te Devote:

O Godhead hid, devoutly I adore Thee,
Who truly art within the forms before me;
To Thee my heart I bow with bended knee,
As failing quite in contemplating Thee.

Sight, touch, and taste in Thee are each deceived;
The ear alone most safely is believed:
I believe all the Son of God has spoken,
Than Truth's own word there is no truer token.

God only on the Cross lay hid from view;
But here lies hid at once the Manhood too:
And I, in both professing my belief,
Make the same prayer as the repentant thief.

Thy wounds, as Thomas saw, I do not see;
Yet Thee confess my Lord and God to be:
Make me believe Thee ever more and more;
In Thee my hope, in Thee my love to store.

O thou Memorial of our Lord's own dying!
O Bread that living art and vivifying!
Make ever Thou my soul on Thee to live;
Ever a taste of Heavenly sweetness give.

O loving Pelican! O Jesu, Lord!
Unclean I am, but cleanse me in Thy Blood;
Of which a single drop, for sinners spilt,
Is ransom for a world's entire guilt.

Jesu! Whom for the present veil'd I see,
What I so thirst for, O vouchsafe to me:
That I may see Thy countenance unfolding,
And may be blest Thy glory in beholding. Amen.

O Mary, Immaculate Mother of Jesus, offer, we beseech thee, to the Eternal Father, the Precious Blood of thy Divine Son to prevent at least one mortal sin from being committed somewhere in the world this day.

"It is a much less work to have won the battle of Waterloo, or to have invented the steam-engine, than to have freed one soul from Purgatory." - Fr Faber

Praise to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise;
In all His words most wonderful,
Most sure in all His ways.

O loving wisdom of our God!
When all was sin and shame,
A second Adam to the fight
And to the rescue came.

O wisest love! that flesh and blood,
Which did in Adam fail,
Should strive afresh against the foe,
Should strive and should prevail.

And that a higher gift than grace
Should flesh and blood refine,
God's Presence and His very Self,
And Essence all divine.

O generous love! that He, who smote,
In Man for man the foe,
The double agony in Man
For man should undergo.

And in the garden secretly,
And on the Cross on high,
Should teach His brethren, and inspire
To suffer and to die.

Praise to the Holiest in the height,
And in the depth be praise;
In all His words most wonderful,
Most sure in all His ways.

NOT READING!!! EARWORM!
In conclusion, I can leave you with no better advice than that given after every sermon by Msgr Vincent Giammarino, who was pastor of St Michael's Church in Atlantic City in the 1950s:

    "My dear good people: Do what you have to do, When you're supposed to do it, The best way you can do it,   For the Love of God. Amen"

I am very fortunate, for I have never heard the "eagles wings" song before (or, at least I don't remember it).  The Novus Ordo Mass that I used to go to had the "My Little Pony" Gloria though...

My favorite hymn, strictly speaking, is the Ambrosian Hymn, Te Deum. Here's a version with the Westminster Cathedral choir alternating with the organ. It's magnificent.

My favorite non-chant hymn melody is probably "Thaxted", which is set to a number of different lyrics like "O God, Beyond All Praising". This version below is set to the patriotic song "I Vow to Thee, My Country":

The Paradise of Eden on Page 75:

1. The Paradise of Eden long ago once brought forth the beautiful Tree of Knowledge in the midst of all the plants.
Thy Church, O Christ, hath blossomed forth with Thy holy and precious Cross,
which hath richly welled forth life unto the world.

But while the former caused Adams death, when he did eat the food thereof,
the other brought back to life again the thief, when he was saved by faith.

Make us partakers of the forgiveness granted unto him, O Christ,
Who hast quelled by The Passion the frenzy of the foe against us all.
And account us worthy of Thy Heav'nly Kingdom,
O Almighty God.

2. When in the furnace of the blazing flame, Thy holy and faithful Youths proved to be as in a cool, refreshing dew,
then did they mysticly portray from before that Thou wast to come
from a Virgin whom Thy brightness would not burn.

As for Thy coming the second time in Thy dread glory as our God,
the wondrous Prophet and righteous man, great Daniel, clearly hath foretold,

when he cried out and said:  I beheld until the thrones were set in place
and the Judge sat for judgement; and then rushed forth the river of that fire,
from the which may we be saved by their entreaties,
O our Master Christ."

I remember a local "new mass" church choir refused to sing this eloquent hymn because it was too exotic.
Fear of the rich theology of the true faith set to music is sad, but in confusing times , right is wrong and wrong is right.

"The World Must Conform to Our Lord and not He to it." Rev. Dennis Fahey CSSP

"My brothers, all of you, if you are condemned to see the triumph of evil, never applaud it. Never say to evil: you are good; to decadence: you are progess; to death: you are life. Sanctify yourselves in the times wherein God has placed you; bewail the evils and the disorders which God tolerates; oppose them with the energy of your works and your efforts, your life uncontaminated by error, free from being led astray, in such a way that having lived here below, united with the Spirit of the Lord, you will be admitted to be made but one with Him forever and ever: But he who is joined to the Lord is one in spirit." Ad perennis vitae fontem

taken from the late medieval hymnal:
Piae Cantiones Ecclessiasticae et Scholasticae Veterum Episcoporum
(Pious Songs, ecclesiastical and scholastic, of the old bishops)

CARDINAL PETRUS DAMIANUS, HIS HYMN ON THE GLORY OF PARADISE
adapted from a mediation by Augustine of Hippo:

1. Ad perennis vitae fontem mens sitivit arida,
Claustra carnis praesto frangi clausa quaerit anima,
Gliscit, ambit, eluctatur exul frui patria.

2. Dum pressuris ac aerumnis se gemit obnoxiam,
Quam amisit, dum deliquit, contemplatur gloriam;
Praesens malum urget boni perditi memoriam.

3. Nam quis promat summae pacis quanta sit laetitia,
Ubi vivis margaritis surgunt aedificia,
Auro celsa micant tecta, radiant triclinia?

4. Solis gemmis pretiosis haec structura nectitur;
Auro mundo, tanquam vitro, urbis via sternitur;
Abest limus, deest fimus, lues nulla cernitur.

5. Hiems horrens, aestas torrens, illic nunquam saeviunt;
Flos perpetuus rosarum, ver agit perpetuum;
Candent lilia, rubescit crocus, sudat balsamum.

6. Virent prata, vernant sata, rivi mellis influunt;
Pigmentorum spirat odor, liquor est aromatum;
Pendent poma floridorum non lapsura nemorum.

7. Non alternat luna vices, sol, vel cursus siderum;
Agnus est felicis urbis lumen inocciduum;
Nox et tempus desunt ei, diem fert continuum.

8. Nam et sancti quisque velut sol praeclarus rutilant;
Post triumphum coronati mutuo conjubilant,
Et prostrati pugnas hostis jam securi memorant.

9. Omni labe defaecati, carnis bella nesciunt;
Caro facta spiritalis et mens unum sentiunt;
Pace multa perfruentes, scandalum non perferunt.

10. Mutabilibus exuti, repetunt originem,
Et praesentis Veritatis contemplantur speciem;
Hinc vitalem vivi fontis hauriunt dulcedinem.

11. Inde statum semper iidem existendi capiunt,
Clari, vividi, jucundi, nullis patent casibus:
Absunt morbi semper sanis, senectus juvenibus.

12. Hinc perenne tenent esse, nam transire transiit;
Inde virent, vigent, florent; corruptela corruit;
Immortalis vigor aurae mortis jus absorbuit.

13. Qui scientem cuncta sciunt, quid nescire nequeunt:
Nam et pectoris arcana penetrant alterutrum,
Unum volunt, unum nolunt, unitas est mentium.

14. Licet cuique sit diversum pro labore meritum,
Caritas hoc facit suum quod amat in altero:
Proprium sic singulonmi fit commune omnium.

15. Ubi corpus, illic jure congregantur aquilse,
Quo cum angelis et sanctae recreantur animae;
Uno pane vivunt cives utriusque patriae.

16. Avidi et semper pleni, quod habent desiderant,
Non satietas fastidit, neque fames cruciat:
Inhiantes semper edunt, et edentes inhiant.

17. Novas semper melodias vox meloda concrepat,
Et in jubilum prolata mulcent aures organa,
Digna per quem sunt victores, Regi dant praaconia.

18. Felix caeli quae praesentem Regem cernit anima,
Et sub sede spectat alta orbis volvi machinam,
Solem, lunam, et globosa cum planetis sidera.

19. Christe, palma bellatorum, hoc in municipium
Introduc me post solutum mihtare cingulum,
Fac consortem donativi beatorum civium:

20. Praebe vires inexhausto laboranti praelio,
Nec quietem post procinctum deneges emerito,
Teque merear potiri sine fine praemio.
______________________________________________________________

1. At the Fount of Life eternal  Parched minds in thirst must stand ;
While the soul in fleshly bondage,  longs to burst her weary band ;
Striving, struggling, as an exile, to enjoy her Fatherland .

2. While it wails it's sad condition,  Pressed by grief, by sorrow crossed,
Sad it looks upon the glory  It's delinquency has cost ;
Present misery increases  Memory of the blessings lost.

3. For how great the joyful gladness  that which brings us perfect peace?
Where in edifices splendid  All of living pearl they dwell,
While with burnished gold the buildings  And the couches gleam as well.

4. Gems alone of countless value  Are the town's foundation seat,
Polished gold like beaming crystal  Forms the paving of the street;
Mud there smears not, dirt appears not,  No diseases do we meet.

5. Winters snowing, summers glowing,  Nevermore their harms can bring ;
Everlasting roses blooming  Make an everlasting spring :
Lily blanching, crocus blushing,  And the balsam perfuming.

6. Pasture growing, meadows blowing,  Honey streams in rivers fair,
While with aromatic perfume  Grateful glows the balmy air ;
Luscious fruits that never wither  Hang in every thicket there.

7. There nor waxing moon, nor waning,  Sun, nor stars in courses bright ;
For the Lamb to that glad city  Is the everlasting Light;
There the daylight beams for ever,  All unknown are time and night.

8. For the saints, as suns all radiant  In eternal beauty shine ;
There with crowns of triumph honored,  All their mutual joys combine,
O'er the prostrate foe victorious, They the wreath of victory twine.

9. Now made clear from every blemish, Carnal strifes are all forgot ;
Body spirit soul united,  join to praise their happy lot,
Perfect peace forever tasting,  ever free from scandal's blot.

10. Stripped of all their changing garments, Here they seek their origin,
Here behold their Lord, the present  Form of Truth, unstained by sin,
Hence the vital sweetness of  The living Fountain drinking in.

11. Thence they draw a power of being,  Measured not by Time's short scroll;
Clear and vivid, joyous ever,  They are free from harm's control ;
Sickness shuns the ever healthful ; feeble age the youthful soul.

12. Here they have an endless being, Since the passing passed away ;
Here they bloom, they grow, they flourish; since corruption saw decay,
And the strength of Life immortal  Brought to naught Death's mortal sway.

13.  What can they who know the Knower  Of all things now fail to know ?
For the bosom's hidden secrets each to each will ever show ;
What they seek or shun is mutual  In Love's unity they glow.

14. Diverse the reward of merit, seeking which in toil each strove ;
But love makes its own the pleasures,  which its dear companions love ;
So the joy of every spirit  Common joy of all shall prove.

15. Where the Body is by right the  Gathered eagles waiting stand
Thus have holy souls refreshment  With the angels glorious band;
Citizens together; eating one  Bread in one Fatherland.

16. Ever full yet ever longing,  what they have they still desire:
No satiety disgusts them,  irks them not starvation dire :
They are filled though e'er aspiring,  and though filled to more aspire.

17. Ever with melodious voices  Heaven's new harmonies they sing ;
On the ravished ear ecstatic  Strains from harps all golden ring ;
To the King, Who made them victors,  Worthy songs of praise they sing.

18. Happy soul whose undimmed vision  in His presence heaven's King,
Watches 'neath the throne of glory  spin the mighty cosmic ring,
Sun and moon and stars and planets  in their stately orbits swing.

19. Christ, the Palm of valiant warriors,  Lead me to Thy blest abode,
When I lay aside war's girdle ;- When I quit this weary road,
Make me sharer in the portion  On Thy citizens bestowed.

20. Grant Thy strength to one now laboring  In the yet unended fight,
Nor refuse when strife is over,  Quiet as the conqueror's right,
Let me merit to possess Thee as my Prize in endless light.

Not trying to be funny, but I get the feeling that if I make it to purgatory then I'll hear my fair share of bad church music.
