Title: Touch-Typing Speed Test
Post by: Ben on February 10, 2013, 01:27:00 AM
I've recently begun touch typing and I'm liking it. Go here and take the test: http://typing-speed-test.aoeu.eu/

I'm curious how well my best score (thus far) holds up against others here. Please post a snapshot.

So far, so good. I think Paeniteo is a good typist. I'm interested in seeing his score.

You should know that I use that website a lot, so perhaps familiarity gives me an edge.

I hope ggreg looks at this and sees that I'm already a decent touch typist after only a short time. It shows initiative on my part. Always looking to improve myself and make myself valuable to potential employers.

I also have Raynaud's disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raynaud's_phenomenon) and typing is difficult at the moment (cold in the house).

However, I just did a quick go, and I got:

Raw CPM: 417, Corrected CPM 417, WPM 83

That is my general "distracted/compromised" typing speed.

When I have some more blood in my fingers, I'll give it another go.

I never used it before and I do not use such applications.

Typing speed of touch typists is mainly based on the individual nervous system. Most touch typists do not type as fast as one would think.

I do not understand this reference, but learning to touch type is a good thing, as that is how one is supposed to type.

I learned to touch type in Dvorak too...but I do not use it enough to get much speed. But it is fast enough to call touch typing.

Uh oh. Now I look like a freak. :P

Your score: 463 CPM (that is 93 WPM)

Your score beats or equals 97.07% of all!

In reality, you typed 481 CPM, but you made 3 mistakes (out of 87 words), which were not counted in the corrected CPM score.

Your mistakes were:

Instead of "measure", you typed "meaure".
Instead of "most", you typed "monst".
Instead of "plain", you typed "plan".

Sometimes, yes, although, individual appearance will vary according.

When I typed that, I had restricted bloodflow and it would have looked more like the first image (upper left). But not all fingers were like that.

When did you start touch typing, and do you notice your typing skills improving with age?

Touch typing is a skill which can be acquired.

Speed is something which is dependent on the individual's nervous system.

If one were to take a bunch of touch typists, give them a meaningful test, and score them all the same, one would find that touch typing speeds are generally far more modest than what one would think. Speed actually doesn't benefit much these days. If one can type without thinking about it, then that is what matters.

I personally learned to type by using touch typing principles learned in school (but not developed due to lack of use) when I got my first computer and learning to program.

The only abnormality is a heavy preference for the left shift key due to my first computer's keyboard having a broken right shift key.

It is not worth correcting that habit for me. Although, when I use a typewriter, I use both shift keys properly.

Yeah, you'll get better. The more you use that site the better scores you'll get.

Paeniteo says that speed is not all that important. I've heard this elsewhere. That the age of the typist is over. I would like to think that being able to type, say, 110 wpm would make you instantly attractive to employers.

Well, I know that if I were to choose between getting my WPM up to, say, 120, or practicing with RiskSolver on Excel, I guarantee that the Excel will be more valuable on a resumé. :D
I think it is a law of diminishing returns thing, for most people. Obviously someone like a court stenographer or closed captioning transcriber needs a very very high speed, but for most people a 'relatively high' average is all that will really count.

According to the site we are using, the median is 189 characters per minute, and 50th percentile is right around the same spot. So anywhere above that, according to these results, is 'above average'. 75th percentile looks like about 270 CPM, 90th is 360, 95th is 430, and 99th is around 510, I think.

They still have it occasionally as a token, but in reality, touch typing itself is what is valuable. Typing 30 WPM or 230 WPM does not make a difference in terms of work for most jobs. Data entry and transcription are the only two where it would count.

Actually, no. Those people are not typing.

They are using a chorded key system which is shorthand, and does not have English output. I have some knowledge of this (I owned such a machine, but I did not learn to use it in a functional way, I just now how to).

The skill of those people is not in typing. It is in listening and mastering the shorthand system they are using.

That is actually a difficult and specialty skill to obtain, as the standards are strict, and the skill requiring a lot of practice.

Here is what the output looks like:

(https://www.suscipedomine.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2Fthumb%2Fc%2Fcf%2FSteno-example.gif%2F350px-Steno-example.gif&hash=d9f3b8ba8dbe040a9bd5596098eb848db357e6bc)

It says:

"This is an example of machine shorthand from a steno keyboard with paper."

Your score: 493 CPM (that is 99 WPM)

Your score beats or equals 98.18% of all!

In reality, you typed 555 CPM, but you made 10 mistakes (out of 103 words), which were not counted in the corrected CPM score.

Your mistakes were:

•Instead of "cover", you typed "vover".
•Instead of "first", you typed "cirs".
•Instead of "complete", you typed "compete".
•Instead of "usual", you typed "ususal".
•Instead of "again", you typed "gagin".
•Instead of "blue", you typed "blu".
•Instead of "left", you typed "lfeft".
•Instead of "picture", you typed "poicture".
•Instead of "laugh", you typed "laught".
•Instead of "cross", you typed "cors".
I advise you to take a 2 minute break now.

Don't think I can beat Eliza, but my hands felt like they were flying when I did this.  My worst fault is that when I make a mistake, I always backspace through it and edit rather than just accept the mistake and move on.  That probably shaved 10 WPM off my score.

Congratulations! You typed all 73 words correctly!

I had trouble with the way the lines moved up and the cursor.

Most jobs requiring typing require about 50 CWPM.  You need a reasonable level of speed for work no hunt and peck - but accuracy is very important too for work.

The current keyboard set up was designed to slow typist down because of the old type writers.

Right now I average 55wpm, which is much better than my old hunt and peck approach, where my average was 30wpm.

61 is a peak that I have not exceeded since.

I did again, got the same score 79 no errors.
The way the line moves up really gives me trouble, I'm in past that word or in the middle of it and it moves up. Then I'm not sure of the line I'm on and I lose time.

Ben that is great you are improving.

I never did use the T9 system, but my phone right now has this neat bit of software where I swipe my finger across all the letters in the word, and it figures out which word I meant. So I guess the idea is for it to be the best of both worlds between T9 and a full keyboard. Works well for me because I am not very accurate on a touch screen.

I saw that. I was waiting for you to post it here.

You're starting to embarrass everyone else here:

I no longer feel like I can take any pride in my victory, because of my friend down on Phatmass. :( 123 WPM, 100% accuracy.

Well he would be considered just slightly above average to a speed demon like Sean Wrona.

Alright, I like the concept of measuring our improving typing speeds, but I don't like the site for the test. I found another one where you type a passage of literature- it seems a little more like what you actually do when you type something(you can look ahead, and the screen doesn't move chaotically around). http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php

I think this test is a more accurate assessment. Good find. Mine was pretty easy, though. I was typing something that I basically had memorized.

Your speed was: 98wpm.

You made 4 mistakes, your mistakes are shown in bold text:

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; then took the other, as just as fair, and having perhaps the better claim, because it was grassy and wated wear; though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay in leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day ! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I shoudl ever come back.

The new test is good, but maybe you should start a new thread and call it Touch-Typing Speed Test II or something. All the scores thus far have been the result of people taking the same test.

I'm out of practice, but last time I checked myself I was at 66 wpm.   I've dropped a tad.  No screen shot, but here's my result:

QuoteYour score: 308 CPM (that is 62 WPM)

Your score beats or equals 83.35% of all!

In reality, you typed 339 CPM, but you made 5 mistakes (out of 61 words), which were not counted in the corrected scores.

Your mistakes were:

Instead of "dry", you typed "drt".
Instead of "numeral", you typed "numberal".
Instead of "family", you typed "famikly".
Instead of "plane", you typed "pkane".
Instead of "fine", you typed "find".

I advise you to take a 2 minute break now.

Not bad for my first time trying, I used to be a 10-key data entry operator (just the number pad to the right of the keyboard) and could do 65,000 keystrokes per hour!  :)

275 CPM    55 WPM     74.64% (score equals or beats)  2 mistakes

Thanks for posting this challenge!
