It has been quiet in this sub for some time. Came across this today and thought some here would find it interesting. I will include the Wiki entry, but I can't be sure of its neutrality and accuracy.

"Die Welt sucht nach Ehre, Ansehen, Reichtum, Vergnügen; die Heiligen aber suchen Demütigung, Verachtung, Armut, Abtötung und Buße." --Ausschnitt von der Geschichte des Lebens St. Bennos.

Prayerful

It probably mentions how Alfred oversaw the translations like the Consolation of Philosophy of Boethius, I think, but anyhow made available a great corpus of Christian classics in Anglo-Saxon. It was also his efforts of creating burghal fortresses spread across his land and organised to gather taxes and levy soldiers and taxes meant that the Normans inherited a very tightly administered England, some contrast to much of Europe where noblemen and others of standing had long ago attained freedom from the Roman taxation of their land, a source of wealth and foundation of a civilisation created substantially from state provisioning ( the endlessly useful olive oil and other crops could be shipped on the hulks of state grain contractors, which gave Roman Africa an notable edge over other places simply providing pork, grain and wine, for the army and City of Rome.

edit: the description of the burghal system is neat and efficient as far as I can tell.
Padre Pio: Pray, hope, and don't worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.
