I once drove to Glenwood Springs from St. Mary's Kansas and I can remember seeing the Rockies in the distance and a clear flat prairie between my car and the distant peaks.  I thought, I'll be in the foothills in 30 mins driving at highway speeds.  It took more than 2 hours to reach them and then hours and hours to drive through to the other side.
Are you certain those weren't the Flint Hills that you saw?

"My brothers, all of you, if you are condemned to see the triumph of evil, never applaud it. Never say to evil: you are good; to decadence: you are progess; to death: you are life. Sanctify yourselves in the times wherein God has placed you; bewail the evils and the disorders which God tolerates; oppose them with the energy of your works and your efforts, your life uncontaminated by error, free from being led astray, in such a way that having lived here below, united with the Spirit of the Lord, you will be admitted to be made but one with Him forever and ever: But he who is joined to the Lord is one in spirit." Isn't that Michigan? No, wait, those are the Irish Hills near the racetrack. Nevermind.

How would I see those ahead of me driving west on I-70?

These were the Rockies.  I am certain of it.

Hard to mistake hills for a mountain chain. Even for an Englishman.
Contentment is knowing that you're right. Happiness is knowing that someone else is wrong.

I was looking at a map of Kansas, and they appear very large and  looming; that is why I asked...
