Old Testament names are a bit too protty for me.

That's my take as well.  Especially here in Southern California with all the Saddleback and Rock Harbor types running about.

Paul is really only the name that sounds to protestant for me. Growing up, every other Lutheran I knew was named Paul.
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable,
most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God
be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored
and glorified in Heaven, on earth,
and under the earth,
by all the creatures of God,
and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Amen.

I really like the idea of naming children after their parents patron saints. My first girl will be Veronica.

I also really like:

Dymphna
Philomena
Rita
Maria
Anastasia
Hilary
Isabel

Why's that?

I would have the tempation to look at her and think of Hillary Clinton instead of St. Hilary.

Kinda like FDR's wife- my greatgrandmother couldn't stand her, because she was always flying around and not at home
taking care of her children.  Eleanor was hardly used after that as a baby name.  ;D
How many Eleanor's do you know today?

I totally see what you mean! It's like that more me for other names. Hilary Clinton never even crossed my mind, it wouldn't keep me from naming a child that.

Dymphna is a very ugly name  :P

I absolutely love it. Plus, my mom has a devotion to St. Dymphna, and she has helped her with her mental health issues a lot the past few years so the name is special to me. :)

Hilary is a very nice name (and for some reason does not necesarily make me think of Ms Clinton.)
For a Child is born to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace

Paul is really only the name that sounds to protestant for me. Growing up, every other Lutheran I knew was named Paul.

I didn't know anyone named Paul -- so I gave the name to a bad character in a novel (I specifically wanted it to be a name of no one I know, so that no one feels hurt because the guy is such a sleeze).  Well, now we know a Paul (Catholic) and I feel awful.  If the book ever gets published, I'll have to let him know that the first draft was from before I knew him.

As far as the name Hilary goes, I wouldn't do it because of the former first lady.  Although, in truth, I don't think the name would have occured to us anyway.

This thread reminds me of this piece of advice that I found when naming our dog:
http://artofmanliness.com/2011/12/16/manly-rules-for-naming-man%E2%80%99s-best-friend/

Especially these bits:

5) Piggybacking on the last corollary to the last rule: Never forget that many dogs live well beyond ten years–which is well beyond the few years of fame most pop stars enjoy. Letting your 14-year-old daughter name your new dog Bieber might make her happy now, but when your child is 24 and Justin Bieber is in rehab, nobody will be happy–least of all, the dog.

9) Naming a dog after your favorite retired athlete isn't the most unique idea, but if you do it, you absolutely have to take into account whether that athlete might do something insane in retirement that will make you want to change the dog's name. There must have been several dozen people in the Buffalo area with dogs named OJ or Juice who were scrambling for new names for their pets in the mid '90s. Retired players are good. Dead players are better. Same goes for actors, actresses, politicians, celebrities, artists, etc...

10) Dogs named after college coaches are a bad idea — too much insecurity and uncertainty about the character of the coach and how long he'll be there. Would you want to have a dog named Paterno right now? Didn't think so.

---

Basically, I'd be wary of names that are too attached to a famous person.  There's a dog at the dog park we frequent named Tiger -- always makes me think of Tiger Woods, the cheater.  Not good.

Awesome choices (with the exception of Hilary, for reasons already stated).  I already have my Philomena and I would love to have an Anastasia.  Unfortunately, my wife doesn't like the name because of Cinderella's step-sister?!??!  Veronica and Rita are also on the top of my list.

One name you need to add is Cecilia, who we just had a week ago Monday.   ;D
