I'm thinking of switching phones, as I don't use half the features on mine. Can I remove the sim card from my old phone and put it in my new one, or is there some special step that only the wireless provider can do?

Depends on the provider.  Some providers load up the spyware on your phone and don't want you using anything but their phone.  So the SIM card is tied to what is called the phone IMEI number.

But it won't hurt anything to try it.  If it doesn't work, contact your provider and they'll send you a new SIM card, or switch the SIM card to your new phone.  You may need to provide your IMEI number.  It should be listed under Settings under something like "about phone" or "account".
