More than 800,000 protesters have taken to the streets of Paris over plans to give gay couples in France the right to marry and adopt children.

Three big marches converged on the Champs de Mars, a large park next to the Eiffel Tower.

France's Socialist government is planning to change the law this year.

But the demonstrators, backed by the Catholic Church and the right-wing opposition, argue it would undermine an essential building block of society.

The organisers put the number of marchers at 800,000, with demonstrators pouring into Paris by train and bus, carrying placards that read, "We don't want your law, Francois" and "Don't touch my civil code".

Police said the figure was closer to 340,000 and one government minister said the turnout was lower than the organisers had predicted. A similar march in November attracted around 100,000 people.

The "Demo for all" event was being led by a charismatic comedian known as Frigide Barjot, who tweeted that the "crowd is immense" and told French TV that gay marriage "makes no sense" because a child should be born to a man and woman.

'Test for president'
Although France allows civil unions between same-sex couples, Francois Hollande made a pledge to extend their rights part of his presidential campaign.

Centre-right UMP President Jean-Francois Cope said the rally would be a "test" for the president because there were "clearly millions of French people who are probably concerned by this reform".

The far-right National Front is also opposed to the change, although its leader Marine Le Pen stayed away from the march, arguing the issue was a diversion by politicians from France's real problems.

"Nothing is more miserable than those people who never failed to attack their own salvation. When there was need to observe the Law, they trampled it under foot. Now that the Law has ceased to bind, they obstinately strive to observe it. What could be more pitiable that those who provoke God not only by transgressing the Law but also by keeping it? But at any rate the Jews say that they, too, adore God. God forbid that I say that. No Jew adores God! Who say so? The Son of God say so. For he said: "If you were to know my Father, you would also know me. But you neither know me nor do you know my Father". Showing one's bare breasts seems to be the pinnacle of an active and engaged citizenship for some women.

Definitely.

Seems to be the only way any one will pay attention to them.

Kinda sad.

I like how you guys pick up on something that was probably a link to another article.

See.  I told this forum that the Catholic Church is for some reason deciding to dig its heels in on this issue.  This is coming all the way from the top and there appears to be a consensus among the bishops that this is a fight they wish to pick with secular governments.

We have never seen a co-ordinated resistance like this to IVF, stem cell research or abortion.  The Iraq war was protested heavily but the Catholic Church was not behind that.

They know something about this legislation that they are not telling us.  The threat from legalising gay marriage does not warrant this response from a bunch of people who have been milquetoast for 50 years.

For some reason the Bishops are acting in unison on this issue and my experience of them tells me that they are doing it to protect their own hides, not stand up for the truth.

You can certainly see how the bare breasts method works on this forum.

Crude, but effective.

Can you elaborate on this?  This is interesting.  How would it protect their hides?  Is it so they are not coerced to do homosexual marriages?  Or?

There are universities that know how to do crowd estimation (though it doesn't seem like it should be too hard, but it probably is harder than it seems).  The question I have is, to get an informed estimate, how deep does one have to dig?  Glenn Beck had a rally in DC a few years ago that the media ignored and/or downplayed, whereas a University said it was around a million based on aerial photographs (I'm playing fast with the facts, because I don't remember, but it was on that order I'm pretty sure.  The number 600,000 comes to my mind, too.)  Of course the media makes sure to highlight 10 or 20 hecklers!  That's how bad it is  How hard it is to get the truth even when it's plainly evident!

Perhaps.

But, whatever the hidden motives, at least they're standing up for a decent cause.

The latest is that there were more than 1,000,000 people in the march to defend traditional marriage. If I were a French polititian, I would see an opportunity here.

God bless these  Frenchmen. They are a testament that there is still some Catholicity left in France, the Eldest Daughter of the Church.
