I couldn't agree with this lady more. Modernist art was created to make money fast. The Salon painters got a raw deal.

What periods does Tom Wolf 's book delve into? I can't stand conceptual art. If a painting or sculpture can't tell me what it's about without words, then it's not really art in my opinion. I shouldn't have to read about it in order to understand it's message. Sure, I can read about it, and it can be a good thing to do, but I shouldn't have to.
I still enjoy Monet, and all the Impressionists, really. But in the end the Salon painters got a raw deal directly because of them. The Impressionist had art dealers who were good at public relations (and b.s.) and they wanted to make money. The Impressionists could crank out the paintings relatively quickly and put them up for sale in the gallery while the salon painters could take a whole year just to finish one piece. When I was in school the professors were saying things like, 'Oh, the Impressionists were the innovators, not like those boring salon painters who were all about technique and had nothing to say, really'. Of course I'm paraphrasing, but that's about the way it was. Yes, they were all about technique, and how. It is some gorgeously beautiful stuff. In many ways, I think it (the Salon) was the culmination of Western art. Their work was standing on the shoulders of the greats, the Greeks and Romans. But the work was labeled 'bourgeois realism'. So unfair. I think we will see these artists vindicated in the coming years, and actually we already are to some extent.
Bourgeureau is my favorite for capturing the human side of everyday life and somehow elevating it to a holy moment.
