I don't think the paten is strictly necessary?  Looks like there was a discussion about it here.  http://www.suscipedomine.com/forum/index.php?topic=16871.0

As if any good Catholic before V2 would accept neither paten nor rail cloth.  ::)

I'm not familiar with the history of how things were done in every time and place, but I'm not sure if these things are strictly required.  That doesn't mean they aren't, but to me the lack of a paten is one of the less upsetting things about the Novus Ordo.

Lack of respect for particles was one of the things that convinced me that the NO takes nothing seriously and is hypocritical by definition.  No sense endorsing their ways by receiving Communion.  Go for family reasons, by all means, I can't see a decent case for presenting yourself for Communion, especially when you will go to Sunday TLM anyway.

Let's just say then, for the purposes of the discussion, that the Mass is a 5pm Saturday anticipated Mass in the traditional rite, with patens.

I would not have an issue receiving once in the evening and once in the morning.
