Today, I found out I have temporomandibular disorder, which has been causing severe jaw pain and headaches this entire year. My doctor wants me to get a mouth guard for when I sleep. Hopefully this solves it.
Does anyone here have experience with this?
I have TMJ and I grind my teeth like crazy at night. The pain the next day used to be nearly unbearable. Before I knew what the pain was from, I was worried that my teeth were rotting and getting ready to all fall out. The pain was so, so bad. First I tried soft mouth guards, but I chewed through them within a few nights. My dentist fitted me with a hard plastic mouth guard two years ago and while there is clearly damage from grinding, the mouth guard has held up and I have almost no pain. My dentist told me that I had done significant damage to my molars from grinding, so she wanted me to get a hard mouth guard right away. Every now and then I have some pain in my jaw, but it's nothing compared to what I used to have. Most days I have no pain at all. I can't even take a nap without the mouth guard or else I'll do some serious damage to my teeth and wake up with considerable pain and tension in my jaw, but with the mouth guard my life has improved immeasurably.
I have a molded, hard mouthguard because I grind my teeth at night. I've ground down the teeth a little bit, and a bit of my gum has receded due to it.
Get a mouthguard asap.
Perhaps a glass of wine before bed would be helpful.
I'm getting a mouthguard today. I might paint a XVI on it.
Why XVI?
It takes 16 to win it all.

Why XVI?
For his favorite pope, obviously. Heh heh heh.
Good guess, but Pius IX, not Gregory XVI, is my favorite.
I have little, perfect circles on my molars that the dentist told me are from grinding my teeth. Strangely, it doesn't seem to cause any jaw pain or headaches for me. I got one of the guards and wore it for a few weeks, but I got sick of it and stopped.
whats with you guys and all the grinding of teeth...? maybe an exorcist?
It's caused by stress, and it's stressful being a rad trad.
There shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves cast out. Luke 13:28
Yeah, I think that kind of gnashing of teeth will be related to things worse than headaches.

It's cyclical, too. The pain and anxiety about grinding one's teeth down to nothing causes more stress and can make the TMJ/TMD even worse.

I finally understan the significance of our Lord's words. It is no joke.
After one night of use, I've noticed that my bite is already different. My molars can't touch anymore, at least not the way they used to.

I hope all is well now, tooth-wise and otherwise.

I'm just curious. Have any of you with this disorder had braces in the past?

Things are getting better slowly.

I don't. The only thing that may have triggered it was a wisdom tooth extraction. I think they for we my jaw too much.

So much for my hypothesis. All the people I know who have had a similar problem had braces in the past (and stopped wearing their retainer) so I thought that was it.

Hhmmmm....
Had braces, grind my teeth, wear my retainer.
Forgot when the grinding started.

I had braces for 5 years and don't grind my teeth. My wife never had braces, grinds her teeth, and wears a mouth guard.
It might be genetic, perhaps? I'm pretty sure my dad grinds his teeth at night.
I would look at your diets, and what medications you are on. Medications are chemicals, and have side-effects. The diet today is largely comprised of chemicals, unless you go organic, even with beer and wine.
Here's something I do. Put your tongue between your teeth during the day when you are not talking. Get's you into the habit of not clenching your jaw or grinding. Worked for me.
I wonder what the statistics would look like in a poll of Spixxies & Sedes, comparing the percentage that have this problem.
My ear has been aching intermittently for about 18 months, and I saw the doctor today. She suggested it might be something to do with the temporomandibular joint. I don't grind my teeth though. It'll be investigated by an ENT specialist sometime.
