Changing the Wii for an Xbox and releasing I am old.

I am giving away our WiiU to a family friend in Portugal.  It's seen 6 kids play with it and we just bought an Xbox, though we revamped the WiiU before gifting it so I was in perfect order.  I tried to play Fortnight and it is way too complex for me to use my left and right hand and thumbs at the same time.  I sense I could never acquire the muscle memory and as I watch my children play they are shooting at pixels I can hardly see.  Even the wartime flying and tank games are too complex for me.

It would be interesting to see how good old gamers from 40 years ago were at playing modern computer games. Joystick, trackball and 1 or 2 fire buttons are about as complex as I am evolved to cope with. X box controllers would take me years to get familiar with.  Not sure it would ever become an instinct.

That was the thing I liked about Wii, the controller is similar to a table tennis bat or bowling arm swing action.

The Curt Jester

Time to go to PC strategy games that don't require good eyesight or reactions.
The royal feast was done; the King
Sought some new sport to banish care,
And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"

The jester doffed his cap and bells,
And stood the mocking court before;
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the painted grin he wore.

He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool;
His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!"

Attempting to play one of the dogfight games last night (just to see whether I could steer the plane) I realised how much I prefer simpler games with just one or two controls.  Watching my 18 year old play Fortnight I hark back to Missile Command, Pong and Breakout.

I don't like complexity in computer games.

The family in Portugal are some Trads who live near Fatima.  Their children are 3 to 11 years old and have no computer games so the Wii is ideal for them.  You can get the Wii device pretty cheap but the games and controllers are still in demand.  About 10 to 30 quid for a game disc and 20 to 30 for a controller and nunchuk.

When I played games in my teens/early 20s it was almost exclusively sports - NHL, NFL and FIFA. I went to a buddy's house a few months ago and was playing NHL on PS5 - He won, but I still got it.

I wish I had a TV, gaming is fun.

I wish computer games could teach one more practical skills.

Here is a typing game I used to play a lot.

Yes, it is brand new.  Was only £250 so I thought why bother with second hand.

This will take you back.  And it is teaching a practical skill, because the controllers that came with the Indy 500 game were only good for that game and nothing else.

I learned to type via computer games.  Probably not the ideal way to do it, but at least I can hit 70 words a minute now (when in practice).

I used Mavis Beacon to learn to type. Loved it.

The level of skill of these players is absolutely mind-blowing!

We are talking six-sigma levels of skill.
