I know you're well aware but praying for the Poor Souls is one of the highest forms of charity we can do. And considering charity covers a multitude of sins, I'm all for that.

So I was thinking we could get a small "confraternity" on here, and we could each take a day to pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. On your day, you would offer up all of your merit for the day, pray 5 decades of the Rosary and what not, for the Poor Souls.

We would only need 7 people to cover the whole week, and if we could get more that would be grand.

If you're game, let me know, with any suggestions as well, and we can get a schedule going.

I'm interested.

There is both a canon and akathist for the dead in the Byzantine rite.  I'm sure there is an analogue in the West.  Is Saturday also a day for the dead in the Roman rite?  I think it would be a good idea if, at least on one day, and if possible, scheduled so we're all praying it at the same time, wherever in the world we are, some kind of organized prayer for the dead.

Maybe also something short every day.   Like a group prayer on the same day, our individual specific day of offering, and then we all pray an angelus for the dead or something every day of the week.

Bonaventure

Put not your trust in princes, in sons of men in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs he returns to his earth; on that very day his plans perish.

Lynne

In conclusion, I can leave you with no better advice than that given after every sermon by Msgr Vincent Giammarino, who was pastor of St Michael's Church in Atlantic City in the 1950s:

"My dear good people: Do what you have to do, When you're supposed to do it, The best way you can do it,   For the Love of God. Amen"

Good idea. We could do something like 5 decades of the Rosary at 2pm EST...that way it's not too early for Pacific and not too late for people like me. I would think Sunday is better but it might interfere with people's schedules if they're at Mass, so y'all let me know what you think.

That time is usually fine for me.  Although sometimes I'm still at church.  But if it's a Sunday that I am, I can always start a little later.

I also like this idea, and the 1:00 P.M. Time sounds good either on Saturday or Sunday.
As to Melkite's question, if there is any day dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory? I don't think so, but the Month of November is dedicated to them, and the 2nd of November is their feastday.

"The World Must Conform to Our Lord and not He to it." Rev. Dennis Fahey CSSP

"My brothers, all of you, if you are condemned to see the triumph of evil, never applaud it. Never say to evil: you are good; to decadence: you are progess; to death: you are life. Sanctify yourselves in the times wherein God has placed you; bewail the evils and the disorders which God tolerates; oppose them with the energy of your works and your efforts, your life uncontaminated by error, free from being led astray, in such a way that having lived here below, united with the Spirit of the Lord, you will be admitted to be made but one with Him forever and ever: But he who is joined to the Lord is one in spirit." Maybe we should make it a point to do something even bigger for the All Saints triduum each year?

Michael Wilson

We should keep it as simple as possible, only because if we begin to add too many devotions, people will fail to perform it. Better a few done by many, than many done by few or none.

That's a good point.  If we do decide to do something for the triduum, maybe just a novena?

I think a novena is a good idea and I agree with @Michael Wilson that we shouldn't get too bogged down. It's in a couple months so lets discuss it closer to then.

I'm not sure about trying to "time" a Rosary or whatever once a week...too many schedules to juggle. Maybe we could just try to do something extra on Sunday?

So we each get a day Monday-Saturday which we dedicate to the Poor Souls all our suffering, merit and prayers, and then on Sunday we ALL do a little extra. You don't have to offer up your communion that day (since it may be the only one of the week for you) but maybe we all commit to an extra 5 decades of the Rosary on Sunday?

My daily Rosary schedule is thus: 6:45am Joyful; 5:15pm Sorrowful; 21:00pm Glorious. Fit me in. Now that scruel year has begun, my days are regimented.

Cool. So it would look something like this:

- No one is bound by pain of sin for failing to fulfill the duties of the Confraternity (obviously)
- Each member is assigned a specific day. By signing up to the Confraternity, you agree to offer up all your merit, sufferings, good works and prayers for the Poor Souls in Purgatory through the intercession of Our Lady on your assigned day.
- On Sundays, all members of the Confraternity agree to offer up, at least, 5 decades of the Rosary specifically for the Poor Souls.
- Members agree to partake in a Novena 9 days prior to the Feast of All Souls. Further novenas may be prayed throughout the liturgical year as agreed upon.

If y'all have anything to add, go for it. And as more members sign up we'll just roll them through each day.
