Long story short, I decided to cancel my recent Kindle Oasis purchase, but would still like to have a metal ereader. I haven't had any luck finding alternatives. Anybody know of any? I'd like to move away from Amazon.

I got a used Kobo Aura off of Ebay.  The one I got is similar to a Kindle Paperwhite.  I'm quite happy with it.

I've found the Boox Nova Air 7.8, which is metal and glass, and which allows you to take notes on your books! And in a separate app. So nifty!

Well, I decided to stay with the Oasis after all. The reviews of the Boox Nova Air mentioned all kinds of problems. And Amazon gave me more than was quoted for my trade in, so that was nice. I'll probably look elsewhere for my ebooks, though.

Prayerful

I once worked for a time in South Dublin Library HQ. They paid particular emphasis on supporting non Amazon (from old style leftist dislike of big corporations) solutions, which was good as my original e-reader was Sony or something, which used a different format from Amazon. Now I have an old enough Kindle paperwhite, which I'll keep until it dies. I cannot in conscience replaces what works. It works, and Sony don't have e-readers any more. If it originates in the West, woke corporate stuff is a certainty. At least Jeff Bezos publicly scorned Biden's economic illiteracy. Excuse my ramblings.
