Ancilla Domini

She's all white, so white that she has a pink tone, especially around the face where her skin shows through. Her eyes haven't decided yet whether they are going to be green or yellow. She's a friendly, sweet girl, who purrs a lot and meows loudly when she wants something. She's not the least intimidated by my older cats. She's very playful and is already attacking my ankles from under beds and tables when I walk by. I prefer people names for cats, especially old-fashioned ones. I haven't found quite the right one for her yet, so any suggestions are appreciated!

The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Very nice! And very insightful.  :)

But she could be Mayaa for short!

Second vote would go to Pangur Ban.  Not that it rolls off the tongue...

QuoteAn Irish poem from the ninth century describes how a monk owned a cat named Pangur Bán, which meant ?fuller white?. The poem begins:

I and Pangur Bán, my cat
?Tis a like task we are at;
Hunting mice is his delight
Hunting words I sit all night.
Son, when thou comest to the service of God, stand in justice and in fear, and prepare thy soul for temptation.

The Harlequin King

For people names, I suggest a favorite (non-canonized) historic figure. My cousin's cat is named Martha Washington. When I got my own cat, I had intended to make a family tradition out of it and call mine Abigail Adams, but the lady didn't like it, so I had to think of something else.

There is also the white cat from the animated film The Secret of Kells, Pangur Bán.

Her name, in turn, came from a medieval Irish poem about a white cat. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangur_B%C3%A1n

The Curt Jester

Once you start going with people names for cats, the creativity goes out the window, unless you want to make up people names.  Call her Arnelda Clawzenegger.
The royal feast was done; the King
Sought some new sport to banish care,
And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"

The jester doffed his cap and bells,
And stood the mocking court before;
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the painted grin he wore.

He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool;
His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!"

Celeste. Or Agnes. I've always liked that name.  :)

Edit: Grace. That seems somehow fitting for a white cat. Or Amelia- that's old-fashioned. :)
