Title: Novena for Immaculate Conception starts Nov 29
Post by: Jayne on November 29, 2015, 12:11:47 PM
Say once a day for nine days, starting on November 29 and ending on December 7

Immaculate Virgin! Mary, conceived without sin! Remember, thou wert miraculously preserved from even the shadow of sin, because thou wert destined to become not only the Mother of God, but also the mother, the refuge, and the advocate of man; penetrated therefore, with the most lively confidence in thy never-failing intercession, we most humbly implore thee to look with favor upon the intentions of this novena, and to obtain for us the graces and the favors we request. Thou knowest, O Mary, how often our hearts are the sanctuaries of God, Who abhors iniquity. Obtain for us, then, that angelic purity which was thy favorite virtue, that purity of heart which will attach us to God alone, and that purity of intention which will consecrate every thought, word, and action to His greater glory. Obtain also for us a constant spirit of prayer and self-denial, that we many recover by penance that innocence which we have lost by sin, and at length attain safety to that blessed abode of the saints, where nothing defiled can enter.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

V. Thou are all fair, O Mary.
R. Thou art all fair, O Mary.
V. And the original stain is not in thee.
R. And the original stain is not in thee.
V. Thou art the glory of Jerusalem.
R. Thou art the joy of Israel
V. Thou art the honor of our people.
R. Thou art the advocate of sinners.
V. O Mary.
R. O Mary.
V. Virgin, most prudent.
R. Mother, most tender.
V. Pray for us.
R. Intercede for us with Jesus our Lord.
V. In thy conception, Holy Virgin, thou wast immaculate.
R. Pray for us to the Father Whose Son thou didst bring forth.
V. O Lady! aid my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto thee.

Let us pray

Holy Mary, Queen of Heaven, Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and mistress of the world, who forsakest no one, and despisest no one, look upon me, O Lady! with an eye of pity, and entreat for me of thy beloved Son the forgiveness of all my sins; that, as I now celebrate, with devout affection, thy holy and immaculate conception, so, hereafter I may receive the prize of eternal blessedness, by the grace of Him whom thou, in virginity, didst bring forth, Jesus Christ Our Lord: Who, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth, in perfect Trinity, God, world without end. Amen.

Thank you Jayne for the reminder, as I would probable have forgotten otherwise about starting the Novena in time, being slothful about these things and such.  It was an especially poignant reminder as back on December 8. 1965, when I was in 9th grade at a parochial school (so it was a school holiday because of the Holy Day), the family had attended Mass at "probable" 7:00 AM in our rural parish, and I was an altar server.  On the way home in a dense fog we observed that someone had driven into a ditch about a mile from our farm.  The family went home (I and my two younger siblings all went back to bed) and dad went back to help the stranded motorist.  An hour or so later we were awakened by mother who had to tell us that our father had been accidentally killed while pulling that car out of the ditch with our farm truck.  This year will be the 50th anniversary of his passing.  I am thankful that this year I'll actually begin the Novena on time! ... not just because of this personal anniversary, but also because Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the United Sates (Pope Pius IX, 1847).

For a lighter note, sometime ago I put the text of the Novena prayer on my phone, and when I went to that after your post I discovered what "I thought" was a personal "typo", but it seems not :).  The fourth line of the posted Novena Prayer (identical to what I have on my phone) reads "then, then angelic...", which should probable be "the, that angelic..."  :) ...NOT YOUR typo for sure, just something I observed!

I do want to reiterate Janye's reminder about  this Novena, for the United States  :D (I believe Canada's patron saints are St. Anne and St. Joseph "?"); for the repose of my father's soul, and for my now 93 year old mother.  Thank you for charity in this regard!

Moneil, thank you for such a touching story.  It is interesting that this reminded you of your father because my own father is my Novena intention. None of us expect him to survive this winter and he is not Catholic or even baptized.

Thanks for this. Immaculate Mary, conceived without stain, pray for us who have recourse to Thee.

"Prayer of St. Pius X to the Immaculate Virgin Mary
O most holy Virgin who didst find favor in God's sight and hast become His Mother; O Virgin, immaculate in body and soul, in thy faith and in thy love, look down with pity on the wretched who in our need seek thy powerful protection.

The evil serpent on whom was cast the primal curse continues, alas, to attack and ensnare the poor children of Eve. But thou, our Blessed Mother, our Queen and our Advocate, thou who from the first instant of thy conception didst crush the head of this cruel enemy, receive our prayers. United to thee with one heart, we beseech thee to present them before the throne of God.

May we never be caught in the snares around us, but rather may we all reach the harbor of salvation. Despite the awesome perils which threaten, may God's Church and all Christian society sing out once again the hymn of deliverance, of victory and of peace. Amen."
