The two books on Calvinism are critiques; both of them quote at length what they critise.
They all sound like very interesting books; any comments on them?
"The World Must Conform to Our Lord and not He to it." Rev. Dennis Fahey CSSP

"My brothers, all of you, if you are condemned to see the triumph of evil, never applaud it. Never say to evil: you are good; to decadence: you are progess; to death: you are life. Sanctify yourselves in the times wherein God has placed you; bewail the evils and the disorders which God tolerates; oppose them with the energy of your works and your efforts, your life uncontaminated by error, free from being led astray, in such a way that having lived here below, united with the Spirit of the Lord, you will be admitted to be made but one with Him forever and ever: But he who is joined to the Lord is one in spirit." I've just discovered the Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life series. Everything from Daily Life of the Aztecs to Daily Life in the Soviet Union, with plenty of American social history in between.

I've just come across the Cadfael series again, and decided to give it a try later. Does anyone know if it's historically accurate?
Edit: and the Jeeves and Wooster series. I used to love these when I was younger.

Quote from: TradGranny on July 29, 2024, 02:14:13 PMRe-reading The Life of Jesus Christ by Anne Katherine Emmerich.
Anne Katheringe Emmerich did not write that "Life"; it was written by her (self-appointed) secretary, Clement Brentano. He was supposed to be taking notes of Ven. Emmerich's words during her extasies; and from these the "Life" and her other revelations were written. However he refused to  show anyone his notes, and the investigation of her life by the Vatican, during her beatification process, could not discover what part of the revelations were her work and what were his or not hers, so they separated her cause from her writings.
According to her "revelations" some of the rebellious angels repented after their fall, and therefore were not condemned to Hell or at least not until the end of the world. Also, Our Blessed Mother was not conceived by St. Anne in the normal way, but how conception would have happened if men had not sinned. Which shows a Gnostic allergy to marriage and reproduction. So God gave our first parents reproductive organs that would be useless if they had never sinned?

QuoteHere he was met by Anna, radiant with
happiness. They embraced each other with holy joy, and each told the other their good
tidings. They were in a state of ecstasy and enveloped in a cloud of light. I saw this light
issuing from a great host of angels, who were carrying the appearance of a high shining
tower and hovering above the heads of Anna and Joachim. The form of this tower was the
same as I see in pictures, from the litany of Our Lady, of the Tower of David, the Tower of
Ivory, and so forth. I saw that this tower seemed to disappear between Anna and Joachim,
who were enveloped in a glory of brightness. I understood, that as a result of the grace here
given, the conception of Mary was as pure as all conceptions would have been but for the
Fall
.32 I]

And footnote 32 above states the same:
QuoteChrist.
If not for the Fall of Adam and Eve from grace, all conceptions would have been miraculous virgin
conceptions
. However, the singular grace of the Immaculate Conception, by which Mary was preserved from inheriting original sin from parents who were sinners, would not have been found in all conceptions, even Adam and Eve never sinned. That singular grace belongs solely to the Virgin Mary. (RC)

The second note which is even more bizzare, is that if the fall had never taken place, it claims that only Our Blessed Mother would have been conceived without Original Sin???? Wait a minute, if Adam had not sinned, all conceptions Would have been like that of the Blessed Virgin i.e. Without Original Sin and in the state of Sanctifying Grace.
