Title: Looking for good custom Rosaries/chaplets
Post by: Der Polka-König on February 23, 2017, 07:37:38 PM
What is a good place to get custom Rosaries and Chaplets? It seems like most custom Rosary websites are dedicated to fancy-looking ones, with white pearl or crystal beads. That's fine, but not what I'm going for. I want quality, but simple; strong and durable; rugged and utilitarian. Something that will last through years of carrying in my pocket and using for prayer. Not something effeminate, and not something that's just a work of art to be admired.

So, with that much out of the way, I'm looking for a Chaplet of St Michael the Archangel, hoping for something around the $50~60 range. I'm getting tired of having to fix the cheap mass-produced one I've got (which currently has several links held together with thread...)

My preference would be to support either a trad-friendly Religious community or trad family business.

Anyone have ideas for me?

There used to be people at FE who would make rosaries.  Haven't really kept up with any of them though, so I couldn't really say.

Perhaps, if you contact the Combat Rosary people, they would do a custom chaplet.

Those corded knot Rosaries hold up really well. They even hold up in the wash, if they get forgotten in a pocket.

I'd love some heavy, durable metal beads for a rosary. :) Like brass or something. Just a thought. Off to Google. :)

Edit: Here we go. Hematite. http://www.shipwreckbeads.com/search/?cmdSearch.x=1&txtSearchTerms=Hematite+oval+rice+beads+8x16&cmdSearch.x=0&cmdSearch.y=0&cmdSearch=Go%21&ThanksToIE=SoCmdButtonIsSentForFormsWith1TextField (http://www.shipwreckbeads.com/search/?cmdSearch.x=1&txtSearchTerms=Hematite+oval+rice+beads+8x16&cmdSearch.x=0&cmdSearch.y=0&cmdSearch=Go%21&ThanksToIE=SoCmdButtonIsSentForFormsWith1TextField)

For a long time, I've wanted to build a rosary from stainless steel then harden and spring temper it to make the ultimate in durable rosaries.  Maybe someday I'll do it but I don't actually have the equipment to do it.  I've got a forge but stainless steel is tricky to deal with and all that thin wire would be a nightmare to heat treat without a regulated oven.

This store on Etsy makes wire-wrapped rosaries for under $100.

That link should take you to the men's rosaries and she does custom work too.

The medals reminded me of this website, that sells lots of other antique bronze medals, crucifixes, and rosary parts:

I especially love their Eucharistic medals:

I though there was someone here whose husband was making wire-wrapped rosaries, or maybe they were. I'd actually like to figure out who, cus we have two rosaries that keep coming apart and I want to have them redone as wire-wrapped.

rosaryworkshop.com is a great place to go.  I have a St. Michael Chaplet from there that is awesome.  You can do custom stuff, and while some of it is glass, etc. there is also stone and other more masculine choices.

I have this one with the blue stones, and it is really nice.

Oh, Parresia, I didn't need more pretty things to drool over! Now you've got 10mm rosewood beads competing in my affections with the amber horn beads on another website, trying to prove which is prettiest! And those multicolored jasper beads:  :swoon: And the way they pair the ave and pater beads on their ready-made rosaries! It's amazing!

I bought a pricey one custom made heirloom rosary from  https://www.etsy.com/shop/robertd5198       http://robertsheirloomrosaries.blogspot.com/

He was very kind, even took broken up payments, and the rosary has been basically indestructible although with precious metals and coral beads. It's coral pink-peach beads (my wedding color), double wire wrapped sterling, with some pearls and silver rose beads, Sacred Heart crucifix and Immaculate
Heart center. It's been blessed, used often, and survived kids playing with it and teething it. I love it. I like to spin beads as I go and it works on these. Only draw back is it's large, not easy to have on you all the time, so need a decade bracelet for that or the smaller rosaries.

Also bought this one and am very happy with it:

The morning star rosaries look nice :)

I make rosaries and have been making them for a couple of years now. I am not a master at making them though, meaning I don't have the knowledge to make those beautiful, expensive "unbreakable" rosaries.

If you want photos and examples, PM me and I'll be more than happy to show my work.

Do you have any experience w/ wire-wrapped? Or is that what you are referring to by the "unbreakable"?

I don't make wire-wrapped. I make (nylon) cord rosaries and metal (eye pin) rosaries. PM me if you want me to send you examples of my work. I do not freely share it on forums.
