What's wrong with the Liturgy of the Hours?

LOTH is a crappy translation, utterly rubbish (4 week psalter?  why even bother with the Office, then?!), and a bastard mix of Psalms.

Cutting psalms out because we don't like them?

Never forget the psalm-prayers that the ICEL saw fit to sneak into their translation.  They happen to be the most nauseating little ICEL didies ever composed, and there's a lot of competing material in that category.

I know they're optional but I've still been letting my four-volume set sit on a shelf...it's just one reason among many.  Plus Breviarum Meum HD is a great app.

I used the Liturgy of the Hours for a year or so when I was reform of the reform and heading towards tradition.

I found it to be similar to the NO in many respects.  It suffered from a lackluster and thoroughly untraditional mindset.  It had horrible translations and the 4-week psalter is just ridiculous.  It's hard to see how that is accepted. 

It also suffered from the whole "40 years ago they half-assed the job of doing it" and still haven't gotten around to revising and fixing the errors. 

Then there is also the comically depressing story of the creators of the LotH not having enough time to print the entire set of readings for "Office of Readings" (from the publisher), so they spread them all out on the floor and picked the ones they fit best.

I was thinking about this yesterday - IIRC, wasn't it Bugnini himself scrambling to sort out the papers on the floor?

I suspect, though, that for most of us LOTH is analogous to the NO:  fixing the translation isn't going to remedy the underlying problems.  LOTH is as much a "banal, on-the-spot product" as the NO.
