So what is the opinion of folks here regarding Sallman's famous "Head of Christ" painting?  I have a large image of it, being handed down from my great-grandparents.  My wife can't stand it, saying it creeps her out and looks like John Calvin (I admit the strong chin does resemble Calvin).  Also, it doesn't portray Christ in His divinity, but humanizes Him too much (the painting was originally called "Son of Man").  I think it attempts to portray Christ as He may have appeared on earth, in a strong, dignified manner, but am open to different interpretations.

I think its the best pop-art you can hang on a wall.

At best I think it's perfectly lacking in interest and inspiration. The definition of forgettable and tepid religiosity.
I do profess to be no less than I seem, to serve him truly
that will put me in trust, to love him that is honest, to
converse with him that is wise and says little, to fear
judgment, to fight when I cannot choose, and to eat no fish.

I don't think its creepy, its just not interesting. Doesn't stop me or get me to think.

The same way Protestantism makes me feel.

It's ok, but it definitely doesn't strike me in any particular way. Would I have get one for my house, no. Would I get rid of one that I've had in my house for years, handed down by my grandparents? No.

It's kind of like the creepy "divine mercy" Jesus. A peace-loving hippy teacher.
