From my distant childhood (I was born after conciliar church) I recall that the ancient Italian (some Italian-American, but most were Italian) woman of my Parish wore solid black and 'smart' black hats.

There were always a few rather old women in my parish when I was growing up who wore the little round white "doilies" (as my family called them). They were just seen as curiosities, as people who clung to their old ways. I bet if these women had had access to a Latin Mass, they would have attended. They've mostly all died by now, though.

I prefer to see veils or mantillas on women at Mass rather than hats. One exception is during Easter time when Easter bonnets can and do look nice. A mother and her two daughters wore them to Mass last Easter Sunday and an elderly man noted it was the first time he'd seen Easter bonnets in years.

What are Easter bonnets!?
Why art thou sad, o my soul? And why dost thou disquiet me?
