So as you can see, I have this tabet. Screen is 7in. I have several Catholic apps (iPieta is one). Is it appropriate for Mass? What say you?

What are your initial thoughts?
"Nothing is more miserable than those people who never failed to attack their own salvation. When there was need to observe the Law, they trampled it under foot. Now that the Law has ceased to bind, they obstinately strive to observe it. What could be more pitiable that those who provoke God not only by transgressing the Law but also by keeping it? But at any rate the Jews say that they, too, adore God. God forbid that I say that. No Jew adores God! Who say so? The Son of God say so. For he said: "If you were to know my Father, you would also know me. But you neither know me nor do you know my Father". Could I produce a witness more trustworthy than the Son of God?"  St. John Chrysostom  Sunday Homily

I think use during Mass could be scandalous.

For use in private devotions in a church, not scandalous.

I tend to leave my digital devices off or in the car when in a trad chapel, though.

Well, there are a lot of pertinent prayers in the iPieta app, like examens of conscience, Acts of Contrition, prayers to say during certain parts of the Mass. But I feel a little uncomfortable too and I'm not sure why, maybe I don't want anyone thinking I'm playing Angry Birds or something either. I don't know.

You hit the nail on the head. I was about to say that you can't play a game on a missal.
If anything, a tablet is a distraction. People start to think about games, or websites, etc. Especially kids looking at someone who uses a tablet in Mass.

If you are talking about giving it to the priest to use during mass that would be inappropriate. I don't see why you couldn't use it yourself as a substitute for a missal.

Touchy issue

I wouldn't use one but that's not because it would sctually be wrong, but because I think it would be a distraction to those around me. It depends on the environment of yr parish too.  I would think it a lot more apprropriate if my chapel had a bunch or at lesst a fair amount of ppl already using one. And that th priest was aware and ok with it too

Ithink in five or ten years it will be more common and thus mire appropriate

Give glory to the Lord of lords: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

I once thought about doing this. My fiance immediately shot down the idea. And really, he's right. Even if you're using it in a completely innocent and pious way, others may not get that impression. While it is their fault for thinking the worst, you also do not want to put others in the position where they could possibly be scandalized.

Books just feel better in the hands, anyway. If none of your missals or prayer books have the prayers you need, you can write them down on a piece of paper and stick them inside of the book to use in church.  :)
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

erin is nice

I use iPieta on my phone during Mass...

I think the backlight would be the thing that turns me off from them.

Very true.

Now, in Southern California, our churches tend to be VERY well lit -- okay, too lit, so perhaps the word "well" isn't right -- but elsewhere this would be an issue.

I was scolded for using my phone in a young adult group meeting once in my indult days -- I'd forgotten my leather bound Bible and was looking up the discussion verses on my phone.

Almost all of the traditionalist chapels I've ever attended have been dark/lightly lit.  My hometown ICKSP chapel is the darkest of these.

The brightest ones I've been in were FSSP chapels that they shared with the diocese.

Spooky, I'm disappointed that you bought such a poor compute.

The independant parish were we assist isn't VERY lit though there are a lot of clear windows, so on a sunny day it's bright.  All the indult masses are brightly lit.  Even the one in the historic mission chapel -- they just installed bright lights recently.   >:(
