Another Victorian children's author I find problematic is George MacDonald. He uses feminine magical beings as substitutes for God in At the Back of the North WindThe Princess and the Goblin, and The Princess and Curdie. I wish I could go back to before I knew that this was a problem, as my list of acceptable Victorian children's authors has been whittled down to E. Nesbit and some Kenneth Grahame.
