The Giver...excellent...well made...great messages...attacks the culture of death in an interesting may. Plotline  isnt airtight but its science fiction

I saw a preview for that and look forward to seeing it now.
"All the good works in the world are not equal to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass because they are the works of men; but the Mass is the work of God. Martyrdom is nothing in comparison for it is but the sacrifice of man to God; but the Mass is the sacrifice of God for man." - St. John Vianney

Seeing this next. The book is great, too.

My in-laws saw this movie, and when they were explaining it to me, it sounded eerily similar to Equilibrium.  Have you seen both movies, and do they both pretty much have the same plots?

Maltese Falcon. Bogart.

A fine choice.

EDIT: Got around to showing Breaker Morant to the wife. She liked it, as I predicted. I've watched it many times... never gets old.

TV and internet got knocked out by lightening so we had to watch movies for a couple of days.  The best was "The Lone Survivor".  I heard the story from Marcus Luttrell himself on the Glenn Beck show years ago.  It was better hearing it from him, but the movie wasn't bad.  It certainly shows how different the perception of honor can be.

The other movie that stood out was "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" with Richard Burton.  A spy flick involving Communists was somewhat interesting.  The best line in the movie was when spy RB tells his Communist girlfriend, "Commies are all about peace and the rest of the world wants war?  Look around, Sweetheart.  Communism has many thousands of bodies laying on their path.  Think about that."  But then he ended up dying for her.  I couldn't tell if that meant he became a Communist too, or what.  It was a little confusing.

Edit: Corrected movie name.

The Awakening

what did you think of it?

Well, I didn't like it much on account of the heroine; I hated her character. She was one of those anti-religious types, even scoffing at God and theists early on in the film, and ended up being a damsel in distress towards the end.

An unlikeable protagonist can really a ruin a story; an example would be the main guy in The Postman (1985) by David Brin. Just awful.

I'm about to watch the original Maltese Falcon.  I haven't seen this one before.
