Strange and Peculiar Musical Instruments
« on: April 20, 2017, 10:49:40 PM »
I enjoy finding weird, unusual, or unfamiliar musical instruments.    Here are three to start with:

The Janko Keyboard Piano - It is designed to make playing in any key use the same fingerings.  It also has a lot of duplicate keys so it makes more options for fingering combinations.   Personally, I don't think it will catch on.

The Microtonal Guitar - for those who want to expand beyond the traditional twelve tone music.

The Marble Machine - an instrument that works like a giant music box with additional accessories.
The royal feast was done; the King
Sought some new sport to banish care,
And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"

The jester doffed his cap and bells,
And stood the mocking court before;
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the painted grin he wore.

He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool;
His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!"

Willy Wonka's going to want that back, once it's through being played with, you know. ;)  :thumbsup:

One should be able to achieve most of the same result of the micro-tonal guitar by merely removing frets to make it more like an Oud.

I believe they've placed the micro-frets simply for ease of seeing scale positions (could be wrong).

By the way, before anyone rends their garments at how good Tolgahan Çoğulu (first video) is, he has a Masters and PhD in Classical Guitar from Istanbul Technical University’s Center for Advanced Studies in Music.

Willy came up with this one after that, but let these guys borrow it, trying to woo them into being Oompa Loompa replacements when they got done touring.  They've been touring ever since.  Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you; The Blue Man Group!!!

I think my favorite sort of peculiar instrument is the hurdy gurdy.

I thought the same thing but he says he wanted frets to preserve the timbre of the classical guitar, which makes sense.

Ah. Been a while since I actually watched the video. That makes sense. Provides all the microtones of the Oud and similar instruments, but without the lose of timbre.
