i am forgetting where i read/heard things again but i heard somewhere, dont remember where, could be a book could be a sermond, dcouldbe a website

anyway some saint said that when you commit a mortal sin, your guardian angel leaves  and you no longer have one.

is it possible for a guardian angel to leave you and never come back?

also, when do you receive a guardian angel, at birth or at baptism?  Do only the baptized have guardian angels?  if you lose your baptismal graces

Sometimes I hear of other people having "close calls" and making it through--they will say things like "That must have been your guardian angel."  I probably have said this too.   but when episodes of abuse and violence happen, (as has happened in my life) I have struggled and wondered, why my guardian angel did not protect me.  what does it mean to be under God's protection and the protection of your guardian angel

does the church teach that every single soul gets a guardian angel, or just the souls of the elect?

I'm pretty sure that the only way to lose your guardian angel is to go to hell.
It is true though ( so a priest told me) if you went by choice to a place of sin ( porn shop, strip club etc) you're guardian angel won't follow you in there and you'll be on your own until you leave and I would guess also repent.

St. Columba

Fr Ripperger said every human gets a guardian angel, and the more commonly held opinion now, according to him, is that we get them at the moment of conception.

He went on the say that a family gets an angel, as does a married couple.  A priest gets an extra one for his priesthood...

Not sure of his sources, but that is what he said!

Quote from: The Catholic EncyclopediaSt. Thomas teaches us (Summa Theologica I:113:4) that only the lowest orders of angels are sent to men, and consequently that they alone are our guardians, though Scotus and Durandus would rather say that any of the members of the angelic host may be sent to execute the Divine commands. Not only the baptized, but every soul that cometh into the world receives a guardian spirit; St. Basil, however (Homily on Psalm 43), and possibly St. Chrysostom (Homily 3 on Colossians) would hold that only Christians were so privileged. Our guardian angels can act upon our senses (I:111:4) and upon our imaginations (I:111:3) — not, however, upon our wills, except "per modum suadentis", viz. by working on our intellect, and thus upon our will, through the senses and the imagination. (I:106:2; and I:111:2). Finally, are not separated from us after death, but remain with us in heaven, not, however, to help us attain salvation, but "ad aliquam illustrationem" (I:108:7, ad 3am) (Pope, Hugh. "Guardian Angel." The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 7. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1910. 3 Apr. 2017).

I could be wrong, if the relationship is so strong that they'd stay with us in Heaven, I don't see how we could lose them during our lifetime.
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable,
most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God
be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored
and glorified in Heaven, on earth,
and under the earth,
by all the creatures of God,
and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Amen.

It has always been my understanding that we all receive a Guardian Angel at conception.  Catholic and pagan alike since we all have the goal of reaching Heaven.  They give us inspiration in times of need.  Kind of a whisper in your ear or that sense of intuition that happens when you get that feeling about certain situations.  Also, as was said earlier, families, towns/cities, states, countries, churches, etc... have Guardian Angels from what I understand.

They are with you until death.  It is an added incentive to not commit sin since you know your Angel sees the grievance you commit against God.  They don't leave you at that time, but exhort you to repent.  Why would they leave you at a time when they are needed most?  To leave you alone just because you have walked into a "place of sin" would go against the whole reason for them being "assigned" to you.  They would be trying to keep you from further sin, and if that sin was committed, like I said, they would be exhorting you to get to confession.

I don't know what causes them to help one person one way in this situation and seemingly not to for the other person.  Other than that is the way God has willed it.  I have been in different situations that I truly believe my Guardian Angel was an intercessor for me.  But in others that I think I needed the help even more, there was no intercession.

I don't have specific proof of these things, they are just what I was taught growing up.  I'll see if I can't find a link.

You get one at conception. He never leaves you, even if you commit mortal sin. When you die he retires. If you've been good the two of you chill out in Heaven. If you've been bad, he chills out in Heaven and you rot and burn. Simple as that.

You make a good point dymphna17 I guess that would be the whole point of a guardian angel.

I love the thought of Christ saying to a soul and to the soul's guardian angel: "Well done, good and faithful servant; come, enter into the kingdom prepared for you by my Father." The angel will have glory in Heaven, because he will have fulfilled the purpose for which he was created; the soul, too. :)
