This google engineer thinks it's AI program is sentient.

A bit more about Lemoine.
https://archive.ph/iTjQ5

Lemoine was a "priest".

from the article,

Quote
Lemoine may have been predestined to believe in LaMDA. He grew up in a conservative Christian family on a small farm in Louisiana, became ordained as a mystic Christian priest, and served in the Army before studying the occult. Inside Google's anything-goes engineering culture, Lemoine is more of an outlier for being religious, from the South, and standing up for psychology as a respectable science.
In conclusion, I can leave you with no better advice than that given after every sermon by Msgr Vincent Giammarino, who was pastor of St Michael's Church in Atlantic City in the 1950s:

"My dear good people: Do what you have to do, When you're supposed to do it, The best way you can do it,   For the Love of God. Amen"

Either some AI is sentient, and it's got a demon behind it, or it's just an incredibly clever computer. I've tried repeatedly to understand the possibility of AI 'taking over' or becoming sentient. It's technically impossible for it to be alive, so it has either be another entity or our own imagination. That's my take anyways. Elon Musk thinks it's inevitably going to take over, and he's a genius.

Don't you need a soul for that?

I don't think a computer program can be sentient or intelligent. Another thing is that the bot can simulate it.

When these bots are released on the internet and 4chan users start chatting with them, funny things happen like this:

Yeah, me either. It's just our imagination.

Is there any proof that the AI only begins to say unpopular things when it is bombarded by users who are trying to manipulate it? Or are people just afraid of admitting that the AI genuinely arrived at "hate speech" as it's opinion of the truth?

Let's define "sentience" first.

Let's define "sentience" first.

It's sentient.

adjective

able to perceive or feel things.
"she had been instructed from birth in the equality of all sentient life forms"

I don't think an AI program could be sentient.  Possibly demonically controlled though.

I used a noun as it is closer to the essence of meaning/definition: "feeling or sensation as distinguished from perception and thought" (per  Merriam-Webster)

If a feeling or sensation is just a transfer of sensory inputs to the "brain", then yes, AI can be sentient. It will never be self-aware though.

Justin Martyr

The least departure from Tradition leads to a scorning of every dogma of the Faith.
St. Photios the Great, Encyclical to the Eastern Patriarchs

CANON I: As for all persons who dare to violate the definition of the holy and great Synod convened in Nicaea in the presence of Eusebeia, the consort of the most God-beloved Emperor Constantine, concerning the holy festival of the soterial Pascha, we decree that they be excluded from Communion and be outcasts from the Church if they persist more captiously in objecting to the decisions that have been made as most fitting in regard thereto; and let these things be said with reference to laymen. But if any of the person occupying prominent positions in the Church, such as a Bishop, or a Presbyter, or a Deacon, after the adoption of this definition, should dare to insist upon having his own way, to the perversion of the laity, and to the disturbance of the church, and upon celebrating Pascha along with the Jews, the holy Synod has hence judged that person to be an alien to the Church, on the ground that he has not only become guilty of sin by himself, but has also been the cause of corruption and perversion among the multitude. Accordingly, it not only deposes such persons from the liturgy, but also those who dare to commune with them after their deposition. Moreover, those who have been deposed are to be deprived of the external honor too of which the holy Canon and God's priesthood have partaken.
