Title: Prayers for a young child -- suggestions?
Post by: GaudeMariaVirgo on November 18, 2019, 11:00:46 PM
Hi all,

My husband and I are new to the faith and attempting to develop a prayer life as a family. We have a small daughter (a little over a year now) and I thought it might be good for us to say a prayer or two for her every evening, since she is too little to pray herself -- perhaps three Hail Marys for her holiness and sanctification, or something similar. Are there any prayers that you like to say for your little ones?

The prayer to your Guardian Angel.
'Oh Angel of God my guardian dear
to whom God's love commits you here
ever this day be at my side to light and guard
to rule and guide.  Amen '

Its so simple and they love the story of their angel watching over them night and day.  As they get older I tell them about their angel also being a witness to sin and being very sad when they do but they also will be right by your side helping you in confession.

Our youngest has been sitting with mama during the family rosary since around that age.  He is also there for all blessings before meals.  At just under 2 he attempts the sign of the cross, bows his head and holds his hands together.  He most loves the Oooo at the end of the Salve Regina.  He also now wants nightly blessings as his older brother gets (sign of cross made with thumb on forehead - bless you my son in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and may you have a ________ day tomorrow).

Privately I make petitions for all family members in my evening prayers.

Good suggestion.

When I was young we said this prayer, with the correction noted above. My version seems to make more sense since I am being commited to the care of the Angel, not he being committed to my care.

I notice, however, that we always said this as part of bedtime prayers, but the words would make more sense to pray in the morning.

Yes you're correct 😊

I learned to say both a morning and a night version, just changing the word "day" to "night".

I always found the meaning of "to whom God's love commits me" to be a little difficult. I still have to think twice about it.

Guardian angel, From heaven so bright,
Watching beside me, To lead me aright,
Fold thy wings round me, O guard me with love,
Softly sing songs to me, Of heav'n above.

Beautiful angel, My guardian so mild,
Tenderly guide me, For I am thy child,
Beautiful angel, My guardian so mild,
Tenderly guide me, For I am thy child.

If you are praying for her, always do an act of consecration to the Blessed Mother. If you are praying with/beside her in order to teach her, I would do the Angel prayer, and the Hail Mary.

Thank you! We're starting out with prayers for her, since she is a baby, but it's lovely to have ideas for simple prayers to teach her when she begins to talk. We're really appreciating all the suggestions!

In reference to the "Angel of God" prayer:
Fr. Walter Ranger SSPX (R.I.P) priest, taught us this addition to end of this prayer, which he found in an old prayer book: "From stain of sin keep me free, and at my death my helper be. Amen.''

Re. Max's correction of the prayer; that is the way my parents taught it to me (with "me") and which I have always said it. The "you" does change the meaning of the prayer.
