I wanted to get a book for learning some Yiddish. Is there any experience at all on this forum with this language and if so, are there any recommended books for learning? I do not want to get too far into it, just enough to cover what I already know in German and to be able to read it.

Whatever you do, don't become a nebish or a mamsa. Or heaven forbid a galitziana.

I know very little Yiddish (apparently less than red solo cup), but everything I've read indicates that it is quite closely related to modern German.  The main difference is that it is written with Hebrew script.  As I recall, you already know that.

If so, you might try reading a passage of Yiddish for which you have an English translation available and seeing how much you understand.  I suspect that a typical language instruction textbook will spend too much time on things you already know, so I recommend some sort of placement test first.

It is a language offensive to pious ears.  ;)

German is not bad in itself. One can even pray in it, if it is one's vernacular.
