What curriculums are used in the U.S. and what do you think of each one of them? Which ones do you prefer to use?

At what age do you start these curriculums?

This is a great kit. Keep it well and it can be used for more than one child. Be sure to read the tips. Then incorporate God into the program such as saying, "Look at the all the beautiful colors God has made. Did God make red, blue, yellow" and so on...." "How many numbers did God make" I think you get the idea. Add in some lives of the saints and enforce how much God loves them and why we love and honor God in return and that should be perfect. Less than $25.00 for a year of schooling. Perfect!

Well that's true, but the dictionary on my Mac says "curriculums" is good too.

Trivia: The plural of "Toys R Us" is most properly voked "Toys R I" via its Latin declension (I learned that from this page while writing a paper a few weeks ago). But other acceptable forms include "Toys R Usses", "Toyses R Us", and "We Be Toys".

Useful link here.  Plenty of free maths, English and IQ test paper.  I have been using these to get my children into grammar schools.

They are suitable for an 11 to 13 age group.

...

Greg!!  Sure didn't expect to see you here... but I'm glad to see you here with something that looks very useful.
[Matthew 8:26]  And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm.

[Job  38:1-5]  Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said: [2] Who is this that wrappeth up sentences in unskillful words? [3] Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me. [4] Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? tell me if thou hast understanding. [5] Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Jesus, Mary, I love Thee! Save souls!

I am on year 15 of homeschooling, and these are my absolute favorite resources.

Math. (begin in pre when ever they are ready for it)
through 3rd grade..https://mcruffy.com/
4-high school- http://teachingtextbooks.com/

Phonics (the author has a great resource in the beginning to help you know when your child is ready to learn the abstract concepts of reading)
http://www.stonetabletpress.com/

Penmanship (they learn printing letters early, then cursive in 1st grade)
https://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/penmanship/

Literature (when they can read on their own)
https://www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/literature-and-poetry/
these are also good for books that you may want your child to study more in debth, and want a guide for
https://stores.progenypress.com/

Our Lady of Victory's literature books are all recommended highly, but I have never cared for their lesson plans that go along with them.  I have all of them on my free reading shelf, along with many of
https://bethlehembooks.com/
https://www.marys-books.com/
and the literature offered by Seton

again, I find Memoria press is much better for school time comprehension and literature study guides.

Here are some great resources for reading lists
https://blog.emmanuelbooks.com/category/the-reading-room/family-read-alouds/

Science (when they can read on their own)
hands down the best.  Watch out for a few weird protestant things.  Human Anatomy had a "you are saved" paragraph, but we discussed the error of that, so it was good apologetics ;), they also get Galileo wrong, but 99.9% awesome
https://www.apologia.com/

For the pre reading, or not reading really well yet, or the overwhelmed by academic school set, I do "unit study" type approach for science.  I get piles of books from our library and we snuggle on the couch and read about our chosen topic, or they read them on their own.

The BEST Cateshism, the only one to consider in my opinion...scroll to the bottom for the address to write to the sisters to sign up.

This is excellent for High School

I use these books with the 3 and 4 year olds until they are ready for the Sisters catechism...

Spelling (after phonics is done, since our phonics has its own spelling program in it)
https://www.sequentialspelling.com/index2.php

Typing (5th grade)
http://www.mavisbeaconfree.com/

Rosetta Stone for languages (5th grade)

History (we listen to the cd's so all ages)

Civics (highschool)
https://www.olvs.org/store/enrollment/12th-grade/grade-12-history-civics-bundle/

Art (begin in preschool with his lower levels)
He has great books for teaching method
http://www.howgreatthouart.com/

History, theory and Catholic perspective (5th grade and up)

https://www.chcweb.com/catalog/ByGradeLevel/SeventhGrade/EverAncientEverNewArtHistory,Appreciation,Theory,andPracticeLevel2/product_info.html

Preschool pre reading readiness...
https://mcruffy.com/collections/preschool-language-arts
https://timberdoodle.com/products/developing-the-early-learner
we also use lots of dry erase books for this age

I use Our Lady of Victory schools "God Gave me the Gift of Language" books in higher grades than they are written for.  Then I do grammar and writing here.  I read once that the mind is not ready for grammar until 5th grade...so I dont push it until after that.

My son did Civics, Law and Math with this school.  I know he did other things, but I can't remember which ones.  My oldest daughter did the math and grammar, but it was too much for her, its very "schooly"  My current 13 year old is doing speech and debate and she loves it.  I hope to have her do a literature discussion class as well as the grammar and writing with this school next year.

Some Catholic curriculum providers that I am familiar with are Mother of Divine Grace https://modg.org/, Kolbe Academy https://kolbe.org/ and Seton http://www.setonbooks.com/index.php.  I think it is useful to read through sites like these just to become familiar with what is offered.

When we started homeschooling, back in the early 90s, we signed up with Seton for our first year because we did not have the confidence to "mix and match" right from the beginning.  However, that is what we moved to later.  This allows you to completely customize your studies to your own situation.

Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum: A Guide to Catholic Home Education by Laura Berquist is the basis of the MoDG program above.  I  also found The Latin-Centered Curriculum: A Home Schooler's Guide to the Classical Curriculum by Andrew Campbell very helpful although not specifically directed toward Catholics.

Some children are ready for formal academic work earlier than others.  It is good to start based on the individual child rather than have an arbitrary starting age.

There are many approaches to and philosophies of homeschooling and I found it useful to read about a lot of different things to see what resonated with me and what i wanted to try.  Many ideas are compatible with Catholicism even though they don't have Catholic in their name.

Yes... yes... Jayne has posted as well... things are all falling back into place now.

As I recall, Jayne has bound herself to Greg's posting frequency.  And barring her just breaking her word, the key to ending this mutually destructive pact is through Greg.  If only we could find a way to entice him to post some more...

So one of my sons is interested in A.I.  I told him A.I. is a fad industry that will never go anywhere.  Does anyone have any opinions on this matter?

Also another son really loves cars and wants to get into the used car sales business.  He thinks he can flip cars for a profit by merely washing them and putting in a fresh battery.  I said he's nuts, but he wants to go forward with it.  Can anyone give him some advice?

My wife thinks we should have a water balloon party for an upcoming birthday.  I have no idea how to efficiently fill up hundreds of water balloons.  Does any man have experience with such a thing?

Lastly, I was looking at my water meter and, oh my goodness, it says I've used a million gallons of water this past month.  Is this normal?

I wish we had someone on this forum that knew how to be successful in those matters.

I don't understand why you are trying to derail a perfectly good post from a mom who is struggling with the reality of home education in our messed up Catholic world.  If the 2 posters who have been MIA decide to add a comment here, let them  :)

This thread is a two year old thread and was resurrected by one of the two people many of us would would be glad to have return.  That both are posting in this thread is a positive development and I'd like to see it continue.

I am also thankful for your detailed homeschooling recommendations.  I am a homeschooling newbie and am grateful for the catechism recommendation.  We currently use Memoria Press so it is good to see another endorsement of their quality.
