Was that movie just basically Spoiler Origins?
The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
    It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
    It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
    And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
    And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
    There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
    Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
    World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

The Martian is a quality production with entertaining performances from the ensemble cast.  Matt Damon's performance as Mark Watney is excellent.

The special effects are excellent as well.  The space stuff is maybe a little fakey with CGI rather than taking a camera up in NASA's vomit comet plane to do zero-g scenes, but overall, it's great work.  There's only one bit that did not work for me as far as serious science fiction, but that's Hollywood. :)  The Mars stuff is mind-blowingly awesome.  Extremely convincing.  You can't tell Matt Damon is in some sound stage or standing in front of a green screen.

If you've read the book, you know it is very much a hard science fiction book and obviously a lot of that isn't going to make the book to movie transition, but the movie does a great job of explaining the basics of Mark's most pressing problems and what he has to do to solve them to stay alive and fed.

Like I said above, the cast is great.  Matt is a solid Mark Watney.  There is not anyone in the film I felt was miscast.

Probably the only downside is that the movie crams a lot into two-plus hours, so the movie moves right along.  My brother thinks it could have benefited from being a duology.

I really liked the book, so it sounds like I'll have to see this.

Gonna put that one on my watch list. I have a hold on the book at the library.

Spooky

I watched "Oculus" last night on Netflix. It was pretty good.

Then I watched "The Taking of Deborah Logan" and it was not as good.
