What do people think about this?

The reason it is of interest to me is that I listened to a radio interview yesterday about the introduction of Apple's 5G phone.

https://forbiddenknowledgetv.net/first-5g-rollout-in-ca-causing-brain-damage-to-firefighters/

Have other posters here read similar warnings or encountered confirmations in other sources, of the dangers of 5G?  The cell tower problem is obviously much more universal in scope than individual use of a 5G phone, which I'm not in the market for, anyway.

Im not sure about that LTC.  I try to be uber objective and read both sides of the argument, but there is good info worth investigating about cell towers in particular.  Sure, there are some "crazy conspiracy" websites, but also a lot of scholarly sources.

I heard a good discussion on Catholic radio recently, discussing the problems with 5G.  I'll see if I can find it.
(also, fwiw, Dr. Oz - hardly the conspiracy type, more mainstream - had a show recently discussing this topic)

Good topic, Miriam.

Cool. I'm all for taking an objective look. But I specifically remember freaking out as a kid when my Dad got his first cell phone because everyone was warning and worried about brain cancer and I thought he was going to get it.

I'm not sure why anyone needs that much speed on a phone.  The screens are too tiny for high-resolution video streaming and what else requires that sort of download speed?

Mostly because they need to move more data around. Like emails with files attached and such.

As far as 5G is concerned, I don't think a single phone will cause tumors in an otherwise healthy person. Cell towers are a different story if only because of the matter of scale.

I see the bolded has registered with only one person so far.  The story is about cell towers, not hand-held phones per se.

Brain cancer myths are as old as cell phones themselves.

Long-term use of both mobile and cordless phones is associated with an increased risk for glioma, the most common type of brain tumor, the latest research on the subject concludes.

The new study shows that the risk for glioma was tripled among those using a wireless phone for more than 25 years and that the risk was also greater for those who had started using mobile or cordless phones before age 20 years.

"Doctors should be very concerned by this and discuss precautions with their patients," study author Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, professor, Department of Oncology, University Hospital, Örebro, Sweden, told Medscape Medical News.

Such precautions, he said, include using hands-free phones with the "loud speaker" feature and text messaging instead of phoning.

The study was published online October 28 in Pathophysiology.

Pooled Data

The recent worldwide increase in use of wireless communications has resulted in greater exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). The brain is the main target of RF-EMF when these phones are used, with the highest exposure being on the same side of the brain where the phone is placed.

The new study pooled data from two case-control studies on histopathologically confirmed malignant brain tumours. The first included patients aged 20 to 80 years diagnosed from 1997 to 2003, and the second included those aged 18 to 75 years diagnosed between 2007 and 2009. Cases came from six oncology centers in Sweden.

Cases were matched with controls of the same sex and approximate age who were randomly drawn from the Swedish Population Registry.

All participants filled out a questionnaire detailing exposure to mobile phones and cordless desktop phones.

The analysis included 1498 cases of malignant brain tumors; the mean age was 52 years. Most patients (92%) had a diagnosis of glioma, and just over half of the gliomas (50.3%) were the most malignant variety — astrocytoma grade IV (glioblastoma multiforme). Also included were 3530 controls, with a mean age of 54 years.

The analysis showed an increased risk for glioma associated with use for more than 1 year of both mobile and cordless phones after adjustment for age at diagnosis, sex, socioeconomic index, and year of diagnosis. The highest risk was for those with the longest latency for mobile phone use over 25 years.

Table. Glioma Risk With Mobile and Cordless Phone Use
Phone Use    Odds Ratio (95% Confidence Interval)
Mobile phone use > 1 year    1.3 (1.1 - 1.6)
Cordless phone use > 1 year    1.4 (1.1 - 1.7)
Mobile phone use > 25 years    3.0 (1.7 - 5.2)

The risk was increased the more that wireless phones were used. The odds ratios steadily rose with increasing hours of use.

The risk for glioma was greatest in the most exposed part of the brain. The odds ratios were higher for ipsilateral exposure and for glioma in the temporal and overlapping lobes.

Further, the risk was highest among participants who first used a mobile phone (odds ratio, 1.8) or cordless phone (odds ratio, 2.3) before age 20 years, although the number of cases and controls was relatively small.

Developing Brain

As Dr Hardell explained, children and adolescents are more exposed to RF-EMF than adults because of their thinner skull bone and smaller head and the higher conductivity in their brain tissue. The brain is still developing up to about the age of 20 and until that time it is relatively vulnerable, he said.

There was a higher risk for third-generation (3G) mobile phone use compared with other types, but this was based on short latency and rather low numbers of exposed participants, said the authors. 3G universal global telecommunications system mobile phones emit wide band microwave signals, which "hypothetically" may result in higher biological effects compared to other signals, they write.

Such biological effects, said Dr Hardell, could include an increase in reactive oxygen species, which several articles have linked to cancer. The p53 gene has also been implicated, he said.

The study's very high participation rate (86% for cases and 87% for controls) makes it unlikely that selection bias influenced the results, said the authors.

Dr Hardell believes the new findings reinforce the message that EF-EMF emissions from wireless phones should be regarded as carcinogenic under International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC) classifications and that current guidelines for exposure "should be urgently revised" to reflect that.

According to the IARC's 2013 report, there is a "causal" relationship between use of both mobile and cordless phones and that the risk of glioma is "possible."

Numerous studies have looked at the link between use of wireless phones and brain tumors. Studies by Dr Hardell and his colleagues dating back to the late 1990s have found a connection with mobile and cordless phones.

That and it fries your balls (for the men who put it in their pocket)

Sept. 19, 2008 -- Men, beware: Using a hands-free device with a cell phone may affect your fertility if you keep your phone close to your testicles, Cleveland Clinic researchers warn in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Men who use these hands-free devices tend to carry their cell phones in their pants pocket or clipped to their belts at the waist while in talk mode. As a result, they may be exposing their testicles to damaging radiofrequency electromagnetic waves, explains Ashok Agarwal, PhD, head of the andrology laboratory and the director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine at the Glickman Urologoical and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

"The Bluetooth devices, which many people are using these days because of health or safety concerns, may not be always so safe. There is a downside," he says.
Cell Phone Radiation Affects Sperm Quality

To arrive at their findings, researchers collected semen samples from 32 men and divided each man's sample into two parts. They placed half of the semen samples 2.5 centimeters away from a 850 MHz frequency cell phone in talk mode for one hour. Most cell phones used in the U.S. are 850-900 MHz. They chose this distance because it is the typical distance between the testes and the trouser pockets.

Previous research from the same group showed that radiofrequency electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones can impair sperm quality, and the new study shows why this may occur. Semen exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones had higher levels of damaging free radicals, lower sperm motility (the ability of the sperm to move and swim) and sperm viability (the percentage of live sperm), and possibly greater oxidative stress, the study shows. There were no significant differences in DNA damage between the exposed and unexposed groups.

"Our findings appear to be in line with other concerns that environmental factors such as toxins, pollutants, and materials used in farming play a role in male infertility," Agarwal says.

Further study is needed to validate the findings. "We will also test the effect [of radiofrequency electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones] at other distances," he says. "We know the radiation impairs sperm quality at 2.5 centimeters, but we don't know if the effect will continue at 3, 4, or 5 centimeters," he says.

Future studies will determine if there is dangerous emission when the phone is in silent or standby mode.

"The emission may be smaller than when in talk mode, but could it still be harmful if it reaches the testes," he says.

ConsumerWatch: 5G Cellphone Towers Signal Renewed Concerns Over Impacts on Health
by Julie Watts and Abigail Sterling
January 25, 2018

OAKLAND (KPIX) — Is a cell tower going up in your neighborhood? If it's not now, it may soon.

Wireless carriers are installing millions of them across the country to enable the new, faster 5G cellphone technology. While many are looking forward to faster cell service, many are also asking: Are there legitimate health concerns?

That question is keeping John Hiestand up at night. Outside his bedroom window he can see a new pole where Verizon will soon install a next-generation cell tower.

"This would be a big tower generating lots of RF outside of our bedroom window 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for many years," he said.

It's called a "small cell" or "distributed antenna system." The industry says they're safe. Many in Piedmont aren't convinced – including the Hiestands.

"Our daughter is a cancer survivor," John Hiestand explained.

Thirteen-year-old Sophia Hiestand has been one of many petitioning the city council to deny this cell tower.

"I mostly talked about my cancer and how it affected me, even though you're not supposed to talk about health issues, I still did," Hiestand said.

However, according to federal law the city simply can't consider health concerns. It's outlined in a small section of the Telecommunications Act, based on science from 1996, back when we were still talking on cellphones that looked like bricks.

"I find it really unfair," said Hiestand.

If cities do consider health, cell companies can sue them.

So, with few legal arguments to deny a tower, they're popping up outside bedroom windows and school campuses, despite objections from across the country.

"5G can be a tremendous boom to California but only if it can be put up quickly and easily," said Hayward Assembly member Bill Quirk. Quirk co-authored legislation that would make it even harder for cities like Piedmont to object to a tower.

"You wouldn't have to go through the planning commission, through the city council," Quirk explained.

Quirk, a former NASA scientist, says he may resurrect the bill that was recently vetoed by governor Brown.

"I know scientifically that putting up these cell phone towers is safe," he said.

But the International Association of Frefighters disagrees. It began opposing cell towers on fire stations, after firefighters complained of health problems.

"These firefighters developed symptoms," says Dr. Gunnar Heuser who conducted a pilot study on firefighters at a station with cell towers.

"The symptoms included problems with memory, problems with intermittent confusion, problems with weakness," Heuser said.

Heuser says their brain scans suggest even low-level RF can cause cell damage and he worries about more vulnerable groups like kids.

"We found abnormal brain function in all of the firefighters we examined," Heuser said.

So, following lobbying by firefighters, assemblyman Quirk and his co-author exempted fire stations from their bill, making them one place cell companies couldn't put a tower.

"This is the first piece of legislation that anyone is aware of where somebody got an exemption because they were concerned about health. Did they tell you at all about the study?" we asked the assemblyman.

Quirk's response: "All I know is that when the firefighters ask, I do what they ask me to do."

"Because they are strong lobbyists?" we asked him. His response: "Yes."

"So if school teachers and parents had a strong lobby and they ask you to pass something that would prevent these from going up near schools, would you do that?" we asked Quirk.

His response: "If I couldn't get the votes any other way!"

We next spoke to Tony Stefani, founder of the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation.

"It's not only the firefighters, it's the people that live within the vicinity of these towers," Stefani said.

Anthony Stefani started with the San Francisco Fire Department in 1974. The 28-year veteran retired as the captain of Rescue 1 in 2003.

Stefani notes that current regulations don't take into account continuous low-level exposure from these small cells 24-hours a day. He also says some fellow firefighters reported that their symptoms disappeared when they move to a station without a tower.

"More of these studies have to be done," he says.

Many international scientists agree. More than 230 scientists from 41 nations — who have published over 2,000 peer-reviewed papers on electromagnetic fields and biology and health — have signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal.

They cite "serious concerns" about "increasing exposure to EMF" based on "numerous recent scientific publications" linking low levels of wireless radiation to health effects.

They're calling for stronger regulations, disclosure about wireless industry ties to regulatory agencies, and they want publicly funded studies on the health effects of EMF emitting devices/base stations (i.e. cell towers).

"I do not believe that there is any health impact on firefighters or anyone else, from cells, period!" Assemblyman Quirk asserted. However he added, "I think doing more studies is always a good thing."

Considering the  the circumstances, we asked Quirk: "Do you think that maybe you should consider putting a pause on legislation that speeds up these towers until there is definitive evidence that there is no harm?"

His's response: "We can do a lot of studies and there are people right now believe it or not who are sure the world is flat."

In a statement the CTIA says it defers to the experts when it comes to the safety of cellular telephones and antennas:

"According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Communications Commission, the World Health Organization, the American Cancer Society and numerous other international and U.S. organizations and health experts, the scientific evidence shows no known health risk due to the RF energy emitted by cellphones.

Likewise, the FCC monitors scientific research on a regular basis and its standards for RF exposure are based on recommended guidelines adopted by U.S. and international standard-setting bodies. That's why the FCC has determined that all wireless phones legally sold in the United States are "safe." This scientific consensus has stayed the same even after the NTP's release in 2016 of its partial findings in a study involving cellphones and lab animals.
